You can always try Harpoon for modern naval warfare. There are several versions of it, including paper rules for miniatures.

I can recommend Harpoon, Distant Guns, Age of Sail II: Privateer's Bounty and any of the games at nws-online.net. The people at Naval Warfare Simulations have done a grand job of overhauling Fighting Steel and creating a strategic overlay for it. Their Navies at War should be great.

Dangerous Waters from Sonalyst would be my recommendation if you are looking for modern multi platform realistic naval combat. Its however more a simulation and puts you in the role of captian, more than a commander of an entire fleet.

This is how modern naval combat actually looks like. The picture is a ingame sonar control panel on a Seahawk helicopter. It takes alot of effort to get into the game and the learning curve is pretty steep if dont have a navy background. Its anyway one of the most realistic wargames I have encountered and I like it alot.

But as I said, its not a "strategy" title...

Anyone got any news on if there actually will be a new Harpoon? There is a forum over at Matrix Games for it, but no dates yet...

There definitely will be a Harpoon Classic Commanders' Edition [HCCE]. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. The supposed date of release is mid-Nov according to the last estimate from AGSI. I'll believe it when I see it, though.

Looking forward to it. Nothing beats the feeling of commanding naval battles when stuck on the plains of Afghanistan . I seriously hope it will released (and patched) before I head out again.

War in the Pacific

If you're into WW2 in the Pacific theater, and you like detail as well as less gamey aspects and more reality, you have to check out War in the Pacific (www.matrixgames.com). Really an outstanding game. Very detailed, though. Not for the light-weight.
