Puller vs. Manstein (Round 3)

Here are some basic facts for each player to help you in your voting (From Wikipedia):

"Chesty" Puller

Lieutenant General Lewis "Chesty" Burwell Puller (June 26, 1898 – October 11, 1971) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps and was the most decorated Marine in history. Puller was the first United States Marine to receive the Navy Cross, the U.S. Navy's second highest decoration after the Medal of Honor, five times. During his career, he fought guerillas in Haiti and Nicaragua, and participated in some of the bloodiest battles of World War II and the Korean War. Puller retired from the Marine Corps in 1955, spending the rest of his life in Virginia.

Manstein

Erich von Manstein (November 24, 1887–June 10, 1973) served the German military as a lifelong professional soldier. He became one of the most prominent commanders of Nazi Germany's armed forces (Wehrmacht). During World War II he attained the rank of Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall).

He was the initiator and one of the planners of the Ardennes-offensive alternative in the invasion of France in 1940. He received acclaim from the Nazi-German leadership for the victorious battles of Perekop Isthmus, Kerch, Sevastopol and Kharkov. He commanded the failed relief effort at Stalingrad and the Cherkassy pocket evacuation. He was dismissed from service by Adolf Hitler in March 1944, due to his frequent clashes with Hitler over military strategy.

Even tho this has been touched on already; size of command is an indifference to me...Manstein recieved my support due his brillance in planning....'Chesty' always had it. and still does.

because of the force and command prescence he had at the levels he commanded. and has instilled in Marines and soliders, at the basic level, then and NOW. Manstein doesnt have that legend about him imo. And in the end it's the men, led by greats such as Puller and Darby and Lovat; who 'fight' the plan.... not the planners. If ya cant see this... then ya see nothing at all.

On the one hand Puller has been getting a lot of votes for being a clear cut American hero for his long and distinguished service. However, I think he has to bow out to one of the master's of mobile warfare and innovators an entire style of fighting. Planning for the destruction of France in 1940, and numerous difficult (if not impossible) missions on the Eastern Front are credited to Manstein. Both men were competent in their time and place, if I was a German in that time I'd want to be under Manstein and if I were a Marine I'd want to be under Puller, but in the greater scheme of affecting military history and affecting the outcomes of large scale battles, Manstein clearly gets the nod in my book.

Reluctantly I voted for Manstein. Puller just never commanded as many troops in battle. Not saying that he couldn't have but Manstein proved that he could and Puller didn't.

This should be Mannerheim.

Since I owe my interest in History to a 3 war Marine who served in Vietnam and lost his son in the battle for Hue I have no choice but to honor their memories by voting for Chesty.

No in depth analysis needed on this one.

Manstien only fought in what two wars (is that right)? Lieutenant General Puller kicked ass in every dark corner of the world, and survived. A true rare warrior. Erich Von Manstien may have been smarter, but Puller had endurance. As to the favoritism for an American hero, it's needed against all the WWII fans who think the Nazi get the shaft and overshadow their great Generals. Put Puller and Manstein in a fist fight, that would settle it quick. Oh well, at least he won his wars even if he lost the "Summer Offensive."

"Good Night, Chesty...."

Chesty Puller was a hero of wars of every type and of every clime and place. He led the greatest Military unit in all of history (the 1st Marines) and stuck it to the politicians in a way no one else could. He never stopped caring for the lives of his men even as he led them into a meatgrinder. He predicted the fall of our armed forces and the loss in Vietnam, and he was the only one who had everything it took to have changed all of that. Mannstein, on the other hand, contended for years that Germany could have won even after Barbarossa, which is a lot harder to defend. Chesty is the clear victor here.

Ok - I think just about everything I can say here has already been said... Manstein was a great military commander and was able to not only command and comtrol a huge Army - but did it masterfully...

Chesty on the other hand was a three-time war vet - and commanded - successfully at some level during each... and he was one of the greatest field commanders of all time... not to mention by the time he retired from the Corps in 1951 he had earned more awards than any Marine in history: five Navy Crosses, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit with "V" device, the Bronze Star with "V" device, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart... and I'm pretty sure he didn't out himself in for any of those!

I have to go with the Bull-chest!

I have a documentary on Chesty Puller life and his accomplishment in 3 wars, narrated by none other than the Duke and directed by John Ford. I highly recommend this documentary to anybody that can see it, as it quite hard to find.
That pretty much sums up my position.

The link to imdb page on it.
