Frederick II vs Wellington (Round 2)

FREDRICK II

Frederick II (German: Friedrich II.; January 24, 1712 – August 17, 1786) was a King of Prussia (1740–1786) from the Hohenzollern dynasty.[1] In his role as a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire, he was Frederick IV (Friedrich IV.) of Brandenburg. He became known as Frederick the Great (Friedrich der Große) and was nicknamed der alte Fritz ("Old Fritz").

Upon ascending to the Prussian throne, he attacked Austria and claimed Silesia during the Silesian Wars, winning military acclaim for himself and Prussia. Near the end of his life, Frederick united most of his disconnected realm through the First Partition of Poland.

Wellington

Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (c. 1 May 1769 – 14 September 1852) was an Anglo-Irish British Army soldier and statesman, widely considered one of the leading military and political figures of the first half of the 19th century. Commissioned an ensign in the British Army, he rose to prominence in the Napoleonic Wars, eventually reaching the rank of field marshal.

Interesting battle here, they almost could have met on the battlefield, and the Duke probably would have had his butt kicked pretty bad

Napoleon...
That's after Napoleon lost a corp to trail Blucher, incompetent generals, and muddy weather. Napoleon would have given Wellington a run for his money in Spain.

The more I read about Frederick II, the more impressed I am.

Here are a few more interesting quotes from Wiipeida:
Quote:
Frederick patronized the arts and philosophers. For years he was a correspondent of Voltaire, with whom the king had a turbulent friendship. He modernized the Prussian bureaucracy and civil service and promoted religious toleration throughout his realm.
Quote:
Frederick frequently led his military forces personally and had six horses shot from under him during battle. Frederick is often admired as one of the greatest tactical geniuses of all time, especially for his usage of the oblique order of battle. Even more important were his operational successes, especially preventing the unification of numerically superior opposing armies and being at the right place at the right time to keep enemy armies out of Prussian core territory.
Quote:
... after Napoleon's defeat of the Fourth Coalition in 1807, he visited Frederick's tomb in Potsdam and remarked to his officers, "Gentlemen, if this man were still alive I would not be here"
Quote:
Frederick managed to transform Prussia from a European backwater to an economically strong and politically reformed state
Quote:
Frederick was a gifted musician who played the transverse flute. He composed 100 sonatas for the flute as well as four symphonies.
Although the Duke did become the Prime Minister, his political career shows no real highlights or inspiration. If not for Waterloo, which really was a battle Napoleon chose not the Duke, Wellington's name would be a mere footnote in history.

Napoleon chose his corp commanders, thus must take responsibility for their failures - poor workman blames his tools. Weather effected both sides, and a good commander should not need to fight in perfect conditions to win.
And Wellington was handicapped by the Prince of Orange.

I voted for Frederick II.

As much as I like the Duke of Wellington, and people I think have a tendacy to underrate him at times, I got to give it to Old Fritz.

Frederick was the master of the battlefield in his day, and he was one of who set Prussia on the path to greatness with his brilliant leadership. I am greatly saddened to have to vote against Wellington though. All well, I must vote for the better general here.

Fred was on his way down big-time until the Empress of Russia died. So the Great was also very lucky. And yes, Wellington got help from Blucher, but he was still holding his own without the Prussians.
