Why not do some articles on the Native American Tribes? Some people out there have heard of the Sioux/Dakota/Lakota, the Cheyenne and the Comanche, but how many are familiar with the Kiowa, Kiowa Apache, Lipan Apache, Crow, Arapahoe, Shoshone, and Pawnee? You could start with each living on the edge of the plains or Mountains in the late 1600s and then pick up when they acquired the horse, and where it enabled them to migrate to.

Each tribe had allies and particular enemies. They each had different mindsets on property, land ownership and warfare.

Some tribes disappeared early like the relatives of the Caddo in Texas, Osage and Arikara. Some like the Karankawa and Tonkawa made the mistake of eating some Commanches!

Some Eastern Tribes also went through the West like the Shawnee, Seminole and the Kickapoo.

Lots of interesting stories to tell about the tribes.

Good idea.

Wild West does a lot of stuff on American Indians but I don't think it has done anything that sort of connects the dots and tells the story in a comprehensive way.

This may seem a little bland compared to other suggestions, but try this:

What kind of diet did law enforcement and cavalry guys have? The army supposedly travels on its stomach, what about them? Also, how did they go about resupplying themselves for food and equipment?

More ideas.

Can the magazine have ample space to advertise or announce.....
  • clothing, hats etc.
  • historical tours.
  • reinactors.
  • places of interest.
  • lodging.
Will Dr. Sinister be taking pictures like he does now?
Will there be games to download like in ACG?
Lots of reinactor pictures are good to have.
Have a fun and safe trip.

Thats actually a damned good idea -(well the Cavalry part especially) - as I knew a guy at work whose daughter (and husband) lived up in ND and were into Cavalry reenacting -and the movies all made it seem like the Cav just rode everywhere - apparently there was a good dea lof walking the horses involved -as well as the supply train to haul all the fodder for the horses (unlike the American Indians - whose horses generally grazed -the Indians (nomadic tribes)themselves were far less active/mobile when there was no grazing available (e.g. in the Winter months).

Maybe a comparing and contrasting article of relative strengths/weaknesses could be pretty interesting.

A couple of other decent 'travelogues type' ideas would be the obvious ones of the various trails -- Oregon/California/Santa Fe/Mormon - as well as the trail of the Nez Perce War .... and a more obscure one might be the trail that Dull Knife took his band of Cheyenne on to reach the Northern reservations. Anyway I imagine the combinations are pretty endless.

Edit: Sorry for the misunderstanding Mr Pruitt. I only meant that they - the cavalry took their horse feed of choice with them -as opposed to letting them only graze.

I have seen a picture of some Cavalrymen eating a meal (potatoes and beans). Prominent was a bottle of catsup! How they were able to transport a fragile glass bottle out into the boonies to spice up their relatively dull field rations shows a delicacy unnoticed by me before. I believe also the mounts were fed grain and got to eat whatever grass was available. Grain is a lot easier to take with you than fodder. Fodder is bulky.

Winter campaigns are how the Army were able to find villages. Plains dwellers were masters of splitting up to confuse an enemy following them.

I'm interested in the men that sought the bad guys from the Wanted posters. Bounty hunters? Was that a job, or did random folks just catch these villains and get the reward? I'd read about that.

Off the mark a bit, maybe...

Details of such things as a Prairie Schooner, a typical prairie or mountain meal, a worka day growing season, barter, a teachers school routine, good historical fishin holes & huntin grounds, various functional shelters, natural fires & tornado's, specific rail lines or stretches... all of or in the era.

Many great ideas...thanks again to all.

Headin' out Thursday night to Tombstone for my Wild West planning session. I'll have your suggestions with me.

FYI I saw a pretty good Australian movie yesterday called The Proposition. It takes place in Australia's frontier during the 1880's. It is dark and violent as heck but pretty interesting. Many similarities to the Western frontier here in the US. It has the feeling of a more brutal Unforgiven type film. If you liked that one you should like this. One of the characters even looks a little like Clint Eastwood!

If you don't mind some pretty brutal violence it is worthwhile.

Do you have a teleporter machine at your base, or connections to sick, warped individuals that might loan you theirs?

When I retire from teaching may I be employed as a bell ringer at your secret base?

Wink Be careful what you ask for...

Slug,

Two things I might point out:

1. Be careful about enquiring about sick, warped individuals in this forum! You never know who may qualify!

2. If you get the job, you may run into your ex students more than you care to....

LOL!
