With the two you mentioned, what were the aditional features?

IIRC, Ace Expansion Pack added a lot more planes, but these were planes I wanted. Pacific Fighters was designed to be flexible, being able to be installed as a stand-alone or as an 'expansion'. It of course had totally new planesets for the PTO. It has been criticized by some fans as 'under-done', but I thought it was fine.

Thanks for the tips mate, I use to play the game quite often but my old computer struggled sometimes, to the point of "freezing" the game during mid flight while loading other objects! My new computer should alleviate this.

Good luck with your new rig. I built my last one about 6 months ago, very happy with it.

Got most of my gear from eBay ( ), most of it brand new! For something worth over $2000 in the shops I made an equivelent for under $500, very satisfied... and more importantly, it's bloody fast!!! IIRC I bought some parts from W.A. postage was dear.

@Achtung Baby and Panther3485

I think Il-2 46 is a good compilation to get for new people or those like Achtung who only have partial updates (ie. Got the original FB or Pacific Fighters) I know it's pretty well impossible to get the Aces Expansion Pack anywhere nowadays.

Il 46 has all 3 plus all the patches integrated as well as the new stuff which is not just fantasy here is what I posted elsewhere.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...2&postcount=11

Quote:
Pe-2: The Pe-2 light bomber similar to the Mosquito a superb little plane and some great static campaigns as bonus.

NOT FANTASY

Storm over Manchuria:

New planes:
А-20С, 1941 (with the glass nose)
Il-10, 1945 (the ultimate Sturmovik)
Ki-27 Ko, 1938
Ki-27 Otsu, 1938 -great old fixed gear fighters
Ki-43-II, 1942
Ki-43-II Kai, 1943
J2M5, 1944 Raiden
N1K2-Ja, 1944 Shinden -Kai super fighters

AI planes: A5M4, 1938
B6N2, 1943
Ki-21-I, 1937
Ki-21-II, 1940

NOT FANTASY

Maps: Burma, Manchuria, Khalkin-Gol (Nomonhan) and my favorite Kiev

...

Kiev has all the monuments (though some were destroyed before or during the war, which mission makers can do of course)

Plus hundreds of new skins and custom ground objects like ahem, bicycles, new tanks, car columns, TRENCHES and bunkers.

NOT FANTASY EITHER

So if you guys don't like the made up stuff fine, don't say it is not realistic, I certainly don't think it is boring, even the 46 part brings in some of those ground objects or the Kiev map which can make GREAT 1941 scenarios.

Again, 46 IS JUST THE LAST ADDON, EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE DVD, INCLUDING PARTS OF THE 46 BIT ARE HISTORICAL.
I don't know too many sims with Burma (Imphal actually) maps, and I am currently flying the Sturmoviks over Manchuria campaign blasting the Kwantung Army which is lots of fun.

Thanks for the tip mate, I'll check it out!

P.S. I'm a sucker for expansion packs sometimes.

Thanks mate.

Yes, I guess the 'fantasy' bits of '46 have kinda put me off investing in the latest version. I was just expressing my disinterest in it, as I already have the lot up to Aces Expansion and Pacific Fighters.

I wasn't really trying to put achtung baby off buying the '46 version; in fact, that's probably the only one he'll be able to get anyway as I've seen nothing else in my local branches of EB games for many months.

I'm sure he'll enjoy it.

Thumbs up

Well yea, the thing was marketed for the fantasy content. Though I think you can get the Pe-2 and the Manchuria addons online separately. If you want to fly online though you have to get it and one more online patch 4.08 (4.09 coming as the very last patch).

Problem is IMO it attracted a few console kiddies online.

Flying online has never really grabbed me, so I'm pretty much a dedicated offline player (with most games/sims, not just that one).

Pe-2 and Manchuria definitely appeal to me, though.

I tried online once, with a space sim (Freelancer), before I finished the first level they banished me to another galaxy! Still don't know exactly why today.

Offline definitely.

I have 1946 and it's quite good. The new planes are pretty fun too. I did find Pacific Fighters to be 'under done' and I don't really like it much. I actually wish that 1946 didn't have it.

Yeah pretty much. I've had IL-2 the original for so long I'm getting a bit bored with it. I'm also trying to spend less time at a keyboard and more time with a brush or some glue in my hands.
