The Battle of Bunker Hill has long held my imagination. I think it was the defining battle for the American Revolution. The most poignant moment, for me, is during Washington's Newburgh address to his officers who were upset with Congress over back pay and other unreimbursed expenses. Washington paused during his talk to read a letter; fumbling in his pockets, he found a pair of spectacles which when he put them on he announced how poor his vision had become in the service of his country. The room filled with tears.

Yorktown, of course. The siege work and land-sea joint operations were magnificent...and not just the battle but the whole campaign.

Such a wide period my top two would be:

Seven Years War in North America (i.e French and Indian War) it not only assured British dominance and allowed the openning of the areas west of the Alleghenies to English speaking settlers, but the whole political and military process of waging it made the American Revolution almost a certainty and set in place mindsets in both London and American that largely determined the political and military decisions made in the Revolution.

The British Conquest of India would be the other. The counter balance in the British Empire to the loss of the US but perhaps more importantly it drew the British into the Great Game with Russian in Central Asia the ramification of which continue to be played out there today.

One of my favorite 'moments' would be King George's War.

The result of French & Spanish unity against England had colonial repercussions that extended to & beyond the American Revolution. Not to mention all of their other colonial concerns.

You know, I am also interested in the early settlement of the Virginia Colony -- Jamestown, Williamsburg, etc., and the events that transpired there/then (Powhatan, John Smith's* discoveries, Cape Henry Cross, etc.)

* No relation to me

Hmm, I think the defense of Charleston, South Carolina during the First American Revolution. Not the second attack, when the British finally conquered the city, but the second, in which a rag-tag group of Charlestonians defended their city against the British fleet.

Also, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, certainly one of the most pivotal turning points in world history.

Yeah... to have been a mouse in the room as our fore fathers debated... and drafting as it occured...

That would have certainly been an astounding series of events to behold.

An interesting choice!

The end of the colonial era: The wars of empire in the late 19th/early 20th centuries and the soccer/mercenary wars of 60s Africa.

I would add to the list, Patrick Henry standing up before any uncomitted Virginia Legeslature and speaking the immortal words. "..Give me Liberty or give me Death!" That was pretty plain and clear.

French and Indian War

I'm interested in French victories in the French and Indian Wars, especially Braddock's humiliating defeat. I wanted the French to win because they had better relationships with Native American tribes than the British.
