The Medieval Era, is fantastic and there's still a lot to be done...
It's incredible how far people ventured, going against all of their fears.

Great collection. Thanks for putting them on the website. We loose perspective of where the frontiers of the unknown were in history.

In the same site, there's an interesting bibliography on the subject. I'll past the link just to make it easier to find.

The Medieval Sourcebook (I love that site) has a collection of maps from Muir's Historical Atlas (1911).
The maps are in a modern style with medieval borders.

I had a class in my 2nd year of college that was called "Medieval Methodology", the Medieval Sourcebook was a must for everyone. I can't believe I totally forgot about it. Thanks for bringing it up. It's a great site.

I typed in balkan into google, and then clicked on images to find a host of maps there (if you haven't done so already). I was pleasantly distracted by the fact that the 4th image was one of 4 lovely lady bottoms. With flags drawn on. Hurrah!
