Bingo! Since 'A' was already taken for Cruiser, Armored...The Navy just used the next letter in the word:

Cruiser, Aviation --- CV

Then they applied it to air groups and squadrons...

VF = Aviation, Fighting
VS = Aviation, Scouting (aka Dive Bombers)
VB = Aviation, Bombing (more Dive Bombers)
VT = Aviation, Torpedo

And made the Marines do the same...

VMF = Aviation, Marine, Fighting

Hull Classifications
Battleships were originally 'B'...Maybe they just needed two letters...like going from 'D' to 'DD'. Monitors used to be 'BM's --- yuck!

Quote:
Surface Combatant Type
Large, heavily armed, surface ships which are designed primarily to engage enemy forces on the high seas.

ACR Armored cruiser (retired)

BB Battleship (originally just "B")
BM Monitor (retired)

ACR Armored Cruiser (pre-1920)
C Cruiser (pre-1920 Protected Cruisers and Peace Cruisers)
CA (first series) Cruiser (retired)
CA (second series) Heavy Cruiser, category later renamed Gun Cruiser (retired)
CAG Guided Missile Heavy Cruiser (retired)
CB Large Cruiser (retired)
CBC Large Command Cruiser (retired)
CC Battlecruiser (retired)
CC (second usage) Command Cruiser (retired)
CG Guided Missile Cruiser
CGN Guided Missile Cruiser (Nuclear-Propulsion)
CL Light Cruiser (retired)
CLAA Antiaircraft Cruiser (retired)
CLG Guided Missile Light Cruiser (retired)
CLGN Guided Missile Light Cruiser (Nuclear-Propulsion) (retired)
CLK Hunter-Killer Cruiser (abolished 1951)
CS Scout Cruiser (retired)
CSGN Strike Cruiser

D Destroyer (pre-1920)
DD Destroyer
DDE Escort Destroyer (not to be confused with Destroyer Escort, DE - an Escort Destroyer, DDE, was a Destroyer, DD, converted for antisubmarine warfare) (category abolished 1962)
DDG Guided Missile Destroyer
DDK Hunter-Killer Destroyer (category merged into DDE, 4 March 1950)
DDR Radar Picket Destroyer (retired)
DE Destroyer Escort (abolished 30 June 1975)
DE Ocean Escort (abolished 30 June 1975)
DEG Guided Missile Ocean Escort (abolished 30 June 1975)
DER Radar Picket Destroyer Escort (abolished 30 June 1975)
A word about the DE type symbol is in order here. There were two distinct breeds of DE, the World War II Destroyer Escorts (some of which were converted to DERs) and the postwar DE/DEG classes, which were known as Ocean Escorts despite carrying the same type symbol as the WWII Destroyer Escorts. All DEs, DEGs, and DERs were reclassified as FFs, FFGs, or FFRs, 30 June 1975.

DL Destroyer Leader (later Frigate) (retired)
DLG Guided Missile Frigate (abolished 30 June 1975)
DLGN Guided Missile Frigate (Nuclear-Propulsion) (abolished 30 June 1975)
The DL category was established in 1951 with the abolition of the CLK category. CLK 1 became DL 1 and DD 927-930 became DL 2-5. By the mid-1950s the term Destroyer Leader had been dropped in favor of Frigate. Most DLGs and DLGNs were reclassified as CGs and CGNs, 30 June 1975. However, DLG 6-15 became DDG 37-46. The old DLs were already gone by that time.

DM Destroyer Minelayer (retired)
FF Frigate (retired)
FFG Guided Missile Frigate
FFR Radar Picket Frigate (retired)
FFT Frigate (Reserve Training) (retired)
The FF, FFG, and FFR designations were established 30 June 1975 as new type symbols for ex-DEs, DEGs, and DERs.
Quote:
Aircraft Carrier Type
All ships designed primarily for the purpose of conducting combat operations by aircraft which engage in attacks against airborne, surface, sub-surface and shore targets. "CV" is from the original description, "Cruiser, Aviation" -- CA was already in use for "Cruiser, Armored". By the 1930s, CV was a single symbol, meaning Aircraft Carrier.

AVG Auxiliary Aircraft Ferry (Escort carrier) (1941-2)
ACV Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier (Escort carrier) (1942)
CV Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier
CVA Attack Aircraft Carrier (retired)
CVB Large Aircraft Carrier (category merged into CVA, 1952)
CVE Escort aircraft carrier (retired) (1943-retirement of type)
CVHA Assault Helicopter Aircraft Carrier (retired)
CVHE Escort Helicopter Aircraft Carrier (retired)
CVL Light Aircraft Carrier (retired)
CVN Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier (Nuclear-Propulsion)
CVS Antisubmarine Aircraft Carrier (retired)

WRG: to Battleships -- this is probably nothing --- but I do know that the Schleswig-Holstein, and Schlesien - the 2 German pre-deadnaughts they were allowed to retain by the Versailles Treaty went by the B designation (at least insofar as GHQ models are concerned --- and other later models went by BB -- might have something to do withthe classification as a "pre-dreadnaught" -- but that might be a little too arcane to be relevant.

The Fouled Anchor...

THE CPO FOULED ANCHOR - The Fouled Anchor is the emblem of the Rate of Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy. Attached to the Anchor is a length of chain and the letters U.S.N.

FOULED ANCHOR - The foul anchor as a naval insignia got its start as the seal of the Lord Howard of Effingham. He was the Lord Admiral of England at the time of the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. During this period the personal seal of a great officer of state was adopted as the seal of his office. The fouled anchor still remains the official seal of the Lord High Admiral of Great Britain. When this office became part of the present Board of Admiralty, the seal was retained on buttons, official seals, and cap badges. The Navy's adoption of this symbol and many other customs can be directly attributed to the influence of British Naval tradition. The fouled anchor is among them.

An easy one...

What was the US Navy's first official aircraft carrier (CV-1) and what was her fate?

Give Danny a cigar!!! USS Langley, affectionately known as the "Covered Wagon", had been converted to a Seaplane Tender and Aircraft Transport Ship when she was sunk attempting to deliver P-40s to Java in February 1942.

Another WWII question...

Fill in the names of the USN and IJN ships...
Quote:
Most significantly, however, ___USN_____ soon engaged ____IJN______, in the first head-to-head confrontation of battleships in the Pacific war. In seven minutes, tracking by radar, ___USN____ sent 75 rounds of 16-inch and 107 rounds of 5-inch at ranges from 8,400 to 12,650 yards, scoring at least nine hits with her main battery and about 40 with her 5-inchers, silencing the enemy battleship in short order. Subsequently, ____USN_____'s 5- inch batteries went to work on other targets spotted by her radar "eyes."
The Answer is Here.
