Was the Ryujo? now that one I was not aware of ... should have specified no Light Carriers allowed

Anyway --same deal as before -- puke out some data - or provide a link ... Btw Admiral was the inspiration for this - while I can't create a separate naval area in here ... (or don't have the power to actually add it ... I can do this in the interim ..)

Junyo was built on the hull of the passenger liner Kashiwara Maru. Lance is right about Ryujo; I was thinking they were classmates because they often operated together.

No...That's what Ed McMahon used to say on the Johnny Carson Show!! Hi-Yo!!!!

This site says Hiyo was a Junyo Class. Other sites call it Hiyo Class.

The problem with IJN carrier classes is that they rarely consisted of more than 1 or 2 ships.

Trauth,

You certainly made me run to my library! There were a number of converted aircraft carriers early on in the war, but on a merchant vessel hull? I found the following:

Shoho class- Shoho, Zuiho built on submarine support ships
Junyo class- Junyo and Hiyo built on merchant hulls
Ryuho class- Ryuho built on a submarine support ship
Chitose class- Chitose, Chiyoda built on tanker hulls, originally Floatplane Tenders

There were some later carriers built to fill the role of escort carriers, but I am sending a fast answer.

Pruitt

Ah yeh, but you left off the most famous pair (not the same hull class- but still converted )

The Akagi (converted Battlecruiser --- sistership was the Amagi which iirc was also being converted into an aircraft carrier when a massive earthquae hit the Tokyo area and damaged it beyond repair.... subsequently the Kaga which was being built as a battleship was converted into a carrier to replace the irrepairable Amagi.

Thanx, man!

Not until the Unryu class, Doc.

Hiyo & Junyo were built upon Oceanliner hulls. Slow!

Year Completed...
  • Hiyo: 1942
  • Junyo: 1942
Displacement 26,949 tons
Dimensions 719'7" x 87'7" x 26'9"

Armament 12 x 5"/40, up to 76 x 25mm/60, 6 x 28 5" AA rockets (1944 on)
Aircraft 53
Crew 1224

There were 3 Escort Carriers of the Taiyo class.

Year Completed...
  • Taiyo: 1941
  • Unyo: 1942
  • Chuyo: 1942
Displacement 20,000 tons
Dimensions 591'4" x 73'10" x 26'3"
Speed 21 knots
Armament 8 x 5"/40, up to 64 x 25mm/60, up to 10 x 13mm/76
Aircraft 27
Crew 850

There was a 4th Escort Carrier. The German turbo-electric liner SCHARNHOST had been trapped in Kobe at the start of WW II, in 1939 & was purchased by the Japanese Government for possible use as troop transport. Midway changed these plans in preference of conversion to an escort carrier to train carrier pilot replacements.

It was named Shinyo

QUESTION...

What vessel was the first purpose built A.C.?

Well what brought this about was me slobbering over my 1:2400th IJN unbuilt carriers that I brought into work today -- I am in the process of listing them - maybe eventually do a database thingie on them ... that and - I used to have to get my rear handed to me in Flattop by my younger brother .... (all my cunning plans came to naught ... I was the Baldric of the Naval gaming genre I am afraid

OK -well how about another one ...

Not counting the Langley - but out of the Pre WWII Aircraft Carriers... there was only one set of sisterships ( set meaning in this case 2 ships) that were originally designed and built as Aircraft Carriers. Which ones were they?

-Oh and yeh and I will eventually get to some more WTTA type topical naval quiz questions - unless someone beats me to it ( which is more than likely )

Trauth,

Did not list the Akagi or Kaga as I was thinking in the line of smaller, light merchant hull conversions. These two were more in common with the Lexington and Saratoga in American service.

The Japanese had two sister ships designed from keel up and not converted. They were named the Soryu and Hiryu. The British had a four ship class: Illustrious, Victorius, Formidable, Indomitable. The US had the Enterprise and Yorktown but the Hornet was added.

My favorite for the most bang for the buck is USS Wasp!

The first purposely designed aircraft carrier was HMS Hermes. HMS Argus, HMS Eagle and IJNS Hosho were conversions.

Oops -well fair enough Pruitt ...

by Sistership I was thinking brisge on the same side of the deck ... there was a bigger pair though... was thinking Shokaku and Zuikaku, both of the Kido Butai- but were sufficiently damaged at Coral Sea to not be able to be a part of the Midway planning.

Yeh you got the US question --- Hornet, Enterprise, and Yorktown were all very similar but the last one was not considered in the class... forgot why exactly ---

Ugh -- just woke up ... - ok someone else needs to ask a few today while I try to come up with a few more.
