Bren vs. BAR

Suppose you're a light machine gunner of the Western Allies in WW2 and you're going on a mission. You have the choice of either a Commonwealth Bren or an American Browning Automatic rifle. Which do you choose and why?

Shame on you for putting the question like this! The Bren is a squad machine gun and the BAR is an automatic rifle! You should have both! The Bren would be in the MG fire team and the other two fire teams would be built around BARs! You would have one fire team providing supressing fire while one team is manuevering and the second fire team is getting ready to either one.

Also the BAR built by FN in Belgium is superior! It has a quick change barrel and pistol type grip! Neither is found on the American version.

The American squad was set up different anyway. The machine gun was provided at Platoon level, usually two M-1919 Browning 30 calibers for 3 squads.

Arguably the MG-42 was a much better buy and was the basis of the German Infantry squad. In effect, the Germans used Machine Gun Infantry.

Bren, it has a larger magazine and it is mounted on the top allowing you to get lower to avoid incoming fire.

Is it true Bren is still in service with 2nd-line British units? That would be remarkable.

I know the Bren, or an updated version was used in the Falklands War, but I do not know if they are still in service today. I believe that most units use the LSW version of the SA80, or the minimi.

Can't get any lower than the bipod will let you. Had to go with the BAR, never understood how you aimed the Bren with the magazine in the way and don't like the idea of sticking my arm up under fire to load it. What was the mag capacity on the Bren? Seems like you'd go through mags pretty fast with both weapons.

BAR of course! How can you line up any targets with that silly top-mounted magazine?

Cpt. Bonze, my friend told me the reason why the magazine is on the top of the Bren gun because it help not to get jam when firing, but again I have no clue If he right or not.

I would take M1918A2 BAR LMG anyday over Bren LMG.

Bren Mark I Light Machine Guns (British)

Weight - 22 Ibs unloaded
Caliber - .303 (7.696m)
Rate of Fire - 500-520 rounds per minute
Effective range - 550m (600 yards)

Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A1 (USA)

Weight - 18 Ibs unloaded
Caliber - .30 (30-06)
Rate of Fire - 550 rounds per minute
Effective range - 550m (600 yards)

Bah, the BAR is too heavy for an assault rifle and too light for an MG.

I'd take the Bren gun any day for a squad machinegun, it has bigger magazine capacity and is more stable.

it would be the bren for me its more accurate firing ,the royal marines may have some left as they and the paras used the bren in the falklands thats all ,most second line units use the LSW .

Superior accuracy and more ammo, can't compare anything more than that at the end of the day, Bren wins.

Valid point about the small capacity of the BAR magazine. A US Army veteran said in a TV interview that in the field the solution was to have two BAR teams per squad. One team would shoot while the other waited for the first one to run out of ammo. When the first team stopped to reload the second team would open up and they kept on taking turns like that.

Where was Ford when these things were designed, highly uneconomical!

I'd rather have a BAR, Its lighter which means more ammo, and IMHO the mag on the Bren gun looks like it would get in the way.

It also looks less like an "Evil baby-killing Self-Sentient assault rifle with .50 cal nukelear ammo OMG LOLO! WTFBBQ!"
