Question Did Hitler Speak English?

I don't know why but I always wondered if Hitler spoke, understood or even read English any time of his life. I know it's prolly an easy question but i couldnt find much on the internet and when i did one said he did and another says he didn't. Does anyone know?

I suspect he didn't, but I'd also be interested to know for sure...

My grandmother once remarked that he had a "thick Austrian accent" that many Germans made fun of. She's long gone now so I can't get any details. Maybe some of our German friends can comment?

I have wondered this as well. I know from reading he had translators on staff but, I don't know for which language. He dealt with Italian, French, and Russian to name a few so I would guess he at least spoke one or the other not to mention English.

Hitler's half brother Alois(?) spent some time in Dublin prior to WWI working IIRC in the Shelbourne Hotel.

He married a local girl and I think they moved to Liverpool afterwards.

If he had any English it was probably through this source that he picked up a few words.

Adolf Hitler has a nephew who name is William Patrick Hitler which he was the son of Hitler's half-brother, Alois Jr. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and now lives under an assumed name in the New York City area (Don't know if he is still alive now or not)

Another one. Heinz Hitler was nephew of Adolf Hitler and he was the also the son of Hitler's half-brother Alois Jr. and and fought at Stalingrad, where he was captured by the Russians, dying in Soviet captivity.

I don't believe that Hitler could speak English, however, Goering was quite fluent in the language and spent hours each day talking with his captors after the war.

Exclamation Hitler's American Nephew & Great-nephews

Google turned up some gems concerning Hitler's American relatives... including the selected last name (Stuart-Houston) when they dropped "Hitler" and a presumed pact (denied by the youngest) among Alois' 4 sons that they would never have children, thus killing of Adolf Hitler's paternal line.

from a British newspaper..
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...0/ixworld.html

from FBI files
http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/bridgd...rickhitler.htm

from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Patrick_Hitler

There are others, of course, but these seemed the most interesting to me.
