I think that Wild Bill was a real character and he tried to be one too. He was a tall, very strong fellow and the stories about him may have been largely true. He did not try to avoid the limelight...least I think so.

Libby Custer commented about Wild Bill saying that he was extremely handsome. Custer hired him for a while as a scout during the Black Hills campaign. Wild Bill was proud of his association with George Custer. He only outlived him for just over a week being shot from the back on 3 August 1876 in Deadwood.

SOAPY SMITH, but I have to admit I'm a little prejudice, he was my great-grandfather.

I submit Henry Starr: robbed more banks than the James Bro.'s, Youngers, Doolin-Dalton's put together. Robbed his last bank from a model T, author and movie star too.

Great thread here, the old west is a topic near and dear to my heart.
A couple of people come to mind, one man who had the most incredible life and death was John Colter. He was a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, he decided to stay in the Wyoming area and trap, meh was taken prisoner by the Blackfoot tribe, his scape from them and his trek through the Yellow Stone area was the basis for the 1966 movie The Naked Prey which was based in Africa and starred Cornel Wilde who also directed it. It is a great film, but the true story is even more incredible, poor old John Coulter died while serving under Nathan Boone in the War of 1812' his body was shipped home to Missouri and left in a shack by his widow, it wasn't discovered for 112 years!
He had a much delayed funeral...

Jesse Chisholm is another man that deserves to be on any list of important westerners. We all know his name and that he opened a trail from Texas to Kansas, but that is half the story,

So many to consider but I'll say Charles Goodnight.

He was a truly a bad man. That is to say he was a bad man to have your troubles with. He was not a gunfighter. He was the type of man that gunfighters avoided.

Goodnight wasn't so bad, he founded a college, had the foresight to preserve a heard of Bison which still thrive today, he also started the Panhandle Cattleman's Association

Probably the baddest man in the old west is seldom mentioned.
Look up Porter Rockwell AKA Old Port, AKA The Destroying Angel.
Old Port was one badass dude!
