I would have to say John Johnston, or Liver Eatin' Johnson as he is better known. Another of his notorious nicknames was Crow Killer

Doc Holliday used a shotgun at times, as many did, but the likes of Bat Masterson and the Earp brothers all respected his skill with a pistol. He also had a large knife made by an uncle from a meat cleaver. I recommend the new biography "Doc Holliday" by Gary L. Roberts. It covers Doc and the many colorful figures he knew on both sides of the law.

VERY LOOSELY. I don't think the original was a microbiotic nut with a sensitive personality who existed solely on a diet of tree moss, berries, wild honey and other vegan delicasies. Those tend to get rather sparse and hard to find in the high mountain meadows once the snow starts to fly and winter sets in for several months at a time. In fact, I think that his bear would have probably sized HIM up as a source of survival protein once his own belly got empty.

I preferred John Huston's half-mad portrayal of Grizzly Adams in the movie "Judge Roy Bean". That was a character much more to my liking.

If you get a chance dgfred, check out the movie "Judge Roy Bean" with Paul Newman. Excellent movie about a really colorful and strange character.

Lewis and Clark!

I would have to go with Lewis and Clark on this one, mainly because those two, with their extreme courage and eager impetuosity to explore the unknown, set the stage and paved the way for every future expedition leader, rugged individual, agent of the state, cowboy, restless ex-soldier and every other type of fearless "Grizzly Adams" adventurer/explorer that was determined to brave the vast, virgin wilderness, document and then settle the West. That's just my opinion on the matter, and since Lewis and Clark and their intrepid team of insatiable explorers were the first to actually outline, record and roughly document with these beautifully drawn maps and letters the vast, intricate river system, the expansive, grassy terrain, many valleys and majestic woodlands of the American wilderness west of the Missouri/Mississippi I believe that they deserve credit as the most memorable characters in the history of the American West. For they were the original settlers/explorers of that region, leading these hitherto unprecedented, extensive excursions and reconnaisance missions into the "great wide open", going way further than any other Frenchman/white dude had ever gone before (the French had several well established settlements up and down the Missouri, in the Eastern Dakotas and I also believe within Eastern Kansas, yet L and C left them all in the dust!)! Those two simply paved the way and made possible any future recon missions into that area, providing the necessary material and info that other like-minded explorers would later rely upon, study and refer to when they themselves set out to document and conquer the American West. They both had brass balls, that's for sure, and each was also possessed of this keen intelligence that enabled both to find these innovative ways to maintain the morale of their men, remain mutually vigilant and stay tactically prudent while preserving this rather calm and steady demeanor while under tremendous pressure and while facing many great dangers! Lewis and clark were the undaunted and spectacular trailblazers at the cutting edge of documenting the soon to expand American frontier, and to this day their precarious journeys and adventures into the heart of our Continent never fail to inspire, so therefore they get my vote for whatever it is worth!
