The Latter-Day Saint Prophet

Brigham Young

Established the State of Deseret, bringing hundreds then thousands of settlers to Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona from all over the world. These settlers came by wagon train, on foot, on trains, and -- more significanty -- by handcart, which they pushed across the great plains in order to get a new and better life.

Just months after his predecessor as head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was killed by a crazed mob in Illinois, he provided a 500-man "Mormon Battalion" to assist the US in the Mexican War. These soldiers were a part of the army that took Santa Fe and San Diego for the US forces (neither of them being the garden spots they are today).

When attacked by A S Johnson and the US Army, he ordered his people not to fight, but to retreat -- saving countless lives.

He brought Christianity to the Indians and established cities, roads, irrigation, telegraphs, and -- well, civilization -- to that part of the world.

The Mormons AKA Latter Day Saints were forced by circumstance to become very self sufficient when it came to arming themselves. Hence gunsmithing was an important trade amoungst the Saints, who nurtured the greatest gunsmith of all time, Robert Moses Browning......................

And in order to man the telegraph lines, they took teenaged boys out of their houses and sat them in telegraph stations -- one of the two things that led to the young men who knock on your door offering you a free book.*

Because those young men had to eat and couldn't grow food while working on the telegraphs, local bishops had to create storehouses to provide food to them as well as others who for temporary reasons were unable to feed themselves. From this grew the church's welfare program, which now provides aid worldwide to LDS families who need a little help and to victims of catastrophes.

It all started with Brigham Young.

*The other thing that led to the current missionary program was a decision by Brigham Young's predecessor, Joseph Smith, who sent church leaders around the world to gather the flock of Zion to Utah, but these were older more established men, usually with families, who were also fed from the bishop's storehouse.

Few realize that he was an expert quick draw in real life, but I seem to recall back in the 70's reading a few times that some gunslinger experts theorized that Sammy Davis jr. could quite possibly have been the fastest known draw in history. Not sure if it were urban myth or not but I recall seeing him demostrate his quick draw on one of the news shows back then as well. Being no expert... I must still opin that he was very fast.

Since that time I believe another gentleman has demonstrated a much faster quick draw methodology that would have surpassed them all.

I tend to think Hardin might have been the quickest killer.

Doc Holliday also went poking around inside people's mouths while he wasn't hacking his lungs out with TB! He also used a shotgun because he couldn't aim a pistol well. I can't remember if the trouble was his eyes or his hands.

If I recall correctly this was the killing he was hung for. I didn't think it was right being hung for murder. He maintained it was an accidental killing and he had only fired through the wall to wake the man up so he would stop snoring.

Doc Holliday would be the first to come to mind, for his color. Given he had TB and continually placed himself in harm's way I can't believe he lived so long.

But I also like Annie Oakley. Anyone with the nerves to shoot a cigarette out of a member of royalty's mouth derserves respect. The actual person escapes me though.

You know, Annie Oakley could have single-handedly prevented World War I from occurring had she only hiccupped while trying to shoot a cigar out of the mouth of the Kaiser.

I gotta' throw in Buffalo Bill Cody too! He wasn't just a showman, he was the Real McCoy! He was the greatest scout and Indian fighter the United States Cavalry ever had. General "Fighting" Phil Sheridan practically adopted the man as a Brother, the two were so very close. One night after Sheridan had been tippling a few drinks, he got into an argument with a scout who claimed to be better at scouting and Indian fighting than Buffalo Bill. He further claimed that he alone should hold the exhaulted name of "Buffalo".

Sheridan sized the man up with a bleary eye before saying. "You ain't fit to be called "Buffalo ! For the rest of that man's carreer, he was referred to as "Buffalo ."
