.38 Browning Pistol?

Was there a Browning model 1911 chambered for .38? I was always under the impression it was chambered for .45 only. I was having a discussion with my father about his time in the army and he said he carried a .38 that looked like the M1911 .45. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

The Thompson submachine gun was also available in the .38 super.
