Looks like an interesting topic I'll have to try and find it.... I'm sure much could have been learned from The American Civil War 1861-1865 and applied to WW1 alas it was viewed as a Colonial War in Europe.
The lessons learned could have been especially helpful in terms of a War of Attrition. Trench Warfare based on defensive dug in earth work positions & Machine Gun positions able to direct fire into killing zones.
The invention's during the American Civil War like the Machine Gun, Weather Proof Cartridges and the Turret mounted cannon changed war into a mass production killing machine never seen before.

I'm just finishing up with Fight To The Finnish (Canadians in the Second World War 1944-1945 by Tim Cook.
I've read several of his books now and enjoyed them all...
