What is this soldier carrying?
The picture at the top of this article shows two soldiers, one with a rifle and the other with a large weapon like a Stinger, but I've never seen it before. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks in advance,

Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW)
To destroy bunkers and other fortifications during assault operations as well as other designated targets with the dual mode rocket and to destroy main battle tanks with the HEAA rocket.

Thanks. Are these reusable or disposable?

Reusable, the encased rockets are loaded at the rear of the launcher.
Each one cost about $13,000

Seeing as I am very ignorant about some of the ordinance that is used in the military, I have a question about why something as simple as a rocket could cost that much?

Well, a Javelin missile costs $83,000, so this one is a bargain.
You have to take into account that the alternative is to bring in artillery, which fires some volleys of IIRC $130 per shell for 155mm HE. But if you include the cost of getting the system there, including human cost, and compare that to two guys carrying a shoulder-fired weapon this one doesn't seem so expensive anymore.
The only thing you have to prevent is troops shooting it needlessly. A nervous guy shooting it at a cat on a roof would be a real waste.

But you get a lot more "bang" and longer range with a Javelin...

Thats a nice picture.
When I watch the videos of troops fighing in Iraq, it seems they do fire it any opportunity they get. But so would I if I thought someone was in the house in front of me.
