My bad, my bad!

It is indeed written by Donald Kagan.

The title of this circa 500 page book is : THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR athens and sparta in savage conflict 431 - 404 bc.

I am not shure if this is a condenced version of the books you mentioned, it's one beefy read though. Very fascinating, and sometimes a bit too micromanaged and repetitive for my taste, but hey, you get yer detail for shure, anyway... To all their own tastes!

I like to recommend here two books of the Cambridge trained historian Tom Holland:

Persian Fire: on the efforts of the 'Persian Expeditionary Forces' to subdue the two Greek 'terrorist states': Athens and Sparta. (my presentism/CS)

Rubicon: on Caesar's bid to power which effectively ended the Roman Republic

I got them around Christmas 2006 and enjoyed both thoroughly. Nicely balanced: very well written by Mr. Holland, not for over-specialized fellow historians but rather for the well informed layman(/ACG members )

Sounds good, are they nicely readable like say Antony Beevor's or Stephen Ambrose's works on ww2? Or more academic like say, Ericsson's 'The road to Staligrad' ??

If you are familiar with these books that is... But you get the point, I'm not in a mood for extra detailed academic style work, my latest experience of such a book was 'The peloponnesian wars', by an author who's name escapes me now, he did get accolades from the Sunday Times (a brit writer of recent fame I belive), my dad borrowed it and therefore I cannot give the authors name, but this book was good, and yet, the overwhealming ammount of detailed work, kind of tired the reader down, and made the book a bit of a chore, so a great book if you are really into the subject or have to know it for schooling or work, but not a pleasure read if you know what I mean.

Therefore, I would probably get one of the books you write about, but only if they are easy to medium reads!

Mr poundr.

Mr. Poundr, I do get your point, but though I tried to rephrase, I cannot express myself better than I did earlier ('history for the interested layman/ACG reader').
I wouldn't qualify either one of Holland's books as easy reads, rather 'medium' , but being a historian my judgment may be biased here. They are IMO more readable because less academically thorough than the book you're possibly referring to, Hanson's:
A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Sparta Fought the Peloponnesian War

Perhaps best way I can help you is leading you to some reviews in Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rubicon-Triu...e=UTF8&s=books, so you can judge for yourself.

I just read a book that was more like a 'lite' version of a long academic easily read paper... It's called: BRITAIN AD, by: Francis Pryor.

Not exactly about war, but defenatelly does dwell on this subject too...

But it puts forth some ideas, that arent exactly new (most of them have been arround archaelogical and historical circles, even if viewed as not orthodox, for circa ten years).

It's about the dark ages in Britain, and the re working of the idea that the coming of the anglo saxons to replace the Celtic (in the south and parts of the northwest, Romano-Celtic), population by violence and distruction to instead something of a mix of peaceful integration, travelling of ideas, and culture faster than actual people ect...

It's academic but, interesting, and can be applied to what happened to other places of the ex-roman empire, especially Gaul...

Warning of Execreble Fiction

I just waded through Conn Igguuden's Emperor - Gates of Rome, which is the first of a four-book fiction series on Gaius Julius Caesar. It has a tenuous connection with history - that connection being simply that the author used the names of famous Romans without necessarily connecting them with recongizable history. This book covers the childhood and adolescence of Casear and his boyhood chum Marcus Brutus, the son of a Roman soiled dove.

Need I say more to discredit this book? Do not waste your time reading it.

Robert Harris: Imperium

In anticipation of our ACG game SPQR, I'm currently reading Robert Harris: Imperium. Harris is the author of Fatherland and Enigma, but in Imperium he has turned from WW2 to the Roman Republic.
This book has put flesh on the bones of what I knew (or thought to know) about the Roman Republic. I have had a so called classic education: six years Latin and Greek at grammar school and two years classic history at university; but this book in a very digestible and thrilling form makes the workings of the Republic much clearer through the actions of the famous orator Cicero (or rather his secretary) then a class ever managed to do. The 1C BC setting is completely believable and to me very authentic.

Highly recommended
