USS Constitution

Interesting. A item in the current (Oct 2017) issue of the Naval Institute Proceedings claims the USS Constitution is the only remaining "commissioned" US war ship that has been in surface combat. Anyone have a take on that one?

Makes sense to me! We have been retiring all the older ships so we can keep the shipyards busy. What has us screwed is someone wants to save money at the same time. There is a difference between thrift and throwing the baby out with the bath water.

There most have been a skirmish with some Iranian speed boats in the last few years or so. Also wasn't there a destroyer damaged by Al Qaeda?

Yes, the Cole, and it's still in commission. Probably a careful wording ("that's terrorism, not surface combat") will exclude that from being the embarrassing one actual warship(1) still in commission to have seen an enemy attack.

As to the Iranian small fry, I think warning shots are regularly fired, but I don't remember recent actual combat. If we go back to the times when Iranian gunboats were actually sunk, I think we'll find the US warships involved have been decommissioned.

(1) I visited the Constitution, I liked the visit, and I'm very glad it still exists and that the US Navy keeps it officially in commission - but it's a floating museum, not an actual warship, obviously.

I would say that terrorism was not that dissimilar from piracy in that it is combat with a non state organisation. When the Constitution was built anti piracy operations would certainly have been considered surface actions. Talking of piracy wouldn't the actions against the Somali pirates count?
