Catalonia.
I've noticed that nobody seems to be talking about this one, and I'm a bit curious as to how others are seeing the Independence referendum in Catalonia.
My stance will be pretty obvious to most who know me, but I'm an outsider in this matter, and all I see are people refusing to discuss the issue.

Indeed, I wondered about it too.
Probably not interesting enough in the grand scheme of things, after all, it's not a region trying to struggle away from dictatorship.
Been in the region a couple times, so it's quicker to draw my attention.
It's on the news just about every day over here. Not just two-liners, but including interviews with older and younger people, mayors, etc.
Boils down to whether or not the region's referendum for independence is legal.
If I were them I'd stick with Spain, but hey, let them have it whatever way they like.
Spanish govmnt shouldn't have forbidden the referendum, simply calling it a poll would have sufficed.
I wouldn't be surprised if Catalunya is one of the economic motors of Spain.
Seems the central govmnt is draining them through taxes, leaving Catalunya in a state of deep debt.

As for the grand scheme of things as for where American interests lie, Spain's internal affairs take a far back seat to American internal affairs. In fact I would say that Europe as a whole is somewhat down in the list of actual (as opposed to perceived) importance to the U.S. North America, of course, is first. Then the Middle East (we are at war you know), East Asia, Eastern Europe, THEN (perhaps) Western Europe. You'all are just not that important anymore.

It's actually good not to be considered important by the US. A nation's chances of being bombed or invaded tends to rise in direct proportion to Washington's assessment of that country's significance..

The Spanish government's response does seem a bit fascistic. My understanding from polls is that if there were a free poll then the vote would be fairly even, not unlike the Scottish vote in 2014. Anyone who manages to vote today will be voting for independence which will further fire up the nationalists and risks the formation of a Catalan version of ETA.
There are historic parallels to Scotland.
Formerly an independent kingdom with unification of crowns followed by political unification a few hundred years later. Though at least in Scotland there was a parliamentary vote in 1707 whereas in Spain political unification was at the barrel of a cannon.

Numerous videos popping up on twitter showing Spanish police beating Catalan demonstrators and persons trying to vote.

And why should we discuss the issue ? Scottish independence is the business for the Scots, Catalonian independence is the business for the inhabitants of Catalonia .
No one in Scotland and Catalonia is waiting for the opinion of foreigners .
Most people ignore where Catalonia is located and know only one thing about Barcelona : the FC and Messi .
It is not on us to decide what is good for Scotland and Catalonia .

The idiocy and violence shown by the police and the spanish government has pretty much sealed the independence of Catalonia. Short or long term, that is hard to say.

If they had had a free vote I suspect that it would have been to stay with Spain but a small margin. Now i think the majority would favour independence.
