Government spying goes far past facebook and the internet. But, again, values of privacy and freedom will always be completely lost on someone who favors big government.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I am far from favoring big government. I'm just not paranoid and thinking they're all out to get me.

You have privacy. But social media isn't private and monitoring isn't censorship.

Unplug if you're so terrified. That's the quickest solution. But if you're plugged in, anyone can see you. That's not big government, that's just being online.

Right, it's just a coincidence that all of your arguments are in favor of big government.

Can we (by we I mean actual Americans) have a party that's in favor of small government principles. Or should we allow both sides to continue to expand the reach of government and erode our freedoms until there's nothing left.

If your argument is that the government doesn't spy on its own citizens then you're completely oblivious to reality.

Of course our government spies on citizens, probably always has and for sure always will. But even if it didn't, posting to social media could garner attention from all sorts of organizations and anyone who posts there should not be surprised or complain when said attention is focused on them.

There's a significant difference between making public posts that anyone can read and the government obtaining all of your private information (credit card info, passwords, name, address, etc) on the basis that you associated yourself with an anti-Trump group on social media. The government reading what's on social media is to be expected, but to breach someone's privacy over something perfectly lawful is an entirely different situation. The latter cannot be accepted as a norm.

The patriot act as well, goes far beyond what we should consider practical monitoring in a free society.

The kind of surveillance mandated by the Patriot Act that you're decrying now would not have been technologically possible without the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which stipulated that telecommunications carriers adopt technology that would more easily facilitate law enforcement taps and other data gathering. I remember Janet Reno testifying in favor of the act in front of Congress, stating that the US needed such capabilities against terrorists and racketeers. Libertarians expressed severe doubts about legally compelling private parties to enable Federal access to such a wide swath of communications, but the Clinton administration claimed that they'd only avail themselves of such capabilities with a properly sworn-out warrant. What the Clinton administration omitted was the fact that laws ban be changed, and be changed rather easily. Since then, presidential administrations of both Republican and Democrat affiliations have expanded all kinds of warrantless surveillance. Once the capability was in place, the laws restricting the government's use of it could be easily circumvented, ignored, or amended to suit the interests of the state. Allowing the Federal Government to dictate what technological capabilities for surveillance should be built into the new telecom systems was the first mistake -- really a crime in my book. All the rest flowed predictably from there.

Somewhat true, but if you don't want to be open to this sort of thing then don't post on social media\public forums. The government can get your personal info anytime they want, it's not that hard for them to do it. It's been done in every administration since social media has been around and it will continue to happen no matter who is POTUS or which party is in charge.

"Spy"? No. "Observe"? Of course.I "observe" people all the time, as do you. If I see someone doing something illegal, I do something about it. Do you?
