West Point responds to tweets of cadet with Che Guevara tee under uniform

The photos, posted by 2nd Lt. Spenser Rapone, show the then-cadet posing with a Che Guevara t-shirt under his uniform and “communism will win” written under his cap at his graduation from the academy in May.
...
“Second Lieutenant Rapone‘s actions in no way reflect the values of the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Army,” the statement from West Point said.
...
The lieutenant is assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, who said in a statement to Army Times that while they support freedom of speech for soldiers, they draw the line at political statements made in uniform.

“The 10th Mountain Division not only supports free speech, it trains every day to ensure our nation has the ability to protect it at all cost,” Lt. Col. Tonya Stokes said. “That being said, when our soldiers are in uniform, politics must be set aside. Our uniform represents every corner of our nation and it cannot be used to promote any single ideology.”

“As figures of public trust, members of the military must exhibit exemplary conduct and are prohibited from engaging in certain expressions of political speech in uniform,” the statement said.

Per Defense Department regulation, active duty service members are not permitted to promote political parties or candidates while in uniform.

Pretty certain his acts are a direct violation of UCMJ and should be taken care of accordingly. It will be tricky to prosecute because they may not want to give him a spotlight. They may let him keep his commission but give him a GOMAR and hopefully he never makes it past 2LT and his career ends fast.

Whoa ...

I can't help but notice, he and Che' have the same eyes; stone-cold evil ones.

Well, so much for his chances of ever getting a security clearance, and I think his sponsors have some 'splaining to do.

Well, that goes against the UCMJ and federal law...

Being a member of a group or suggesting sedition against the US is prohibited. For example, you couldn't be AntiFa (BAMN), a Sovereign Citizen, or an Anarchist and be a part of the military. All three advocate violence or revolution against the government.

A Communist POV requires you advocating the elimination of the Constitution as written and an overthrow of the current form of US government. It amounts to a violation of your oath of office for an officer in the military.

I think its ok, even if he had a third reich t shirt that would be fine.. I may not agree with these views but what counts to me is not the guys hobbies but if he puts the US flag first. Now during Vietnam and going back to WW1 even the CSA flag was visible on the battlefield and in US parades. Now that said the rules are the rules and so if the communist lover is kicked out of the USMC thats just how it is. I am merely providing my opinion on the matter, I say a US military member can at least on off duty wear w/e type of clothing he wants to.

I don't think that you understand the responsibilities inherent in accepting an officer's commission in the United States military.

So what is the likely response?
Will they discharge him or make him miserable?

Being an officer, he's going to get messed up fitreps (evaluations) and be sent somewhere where he's harmless and useless that tells those on promotion boards "don't promote this guy!" He won't be going overseas either. They'll keep him INCONUS at some really undesirable base. Maybe a reserve center in the middle of nowhere as XO or something like that.

He'll ride out his mandatory term of service (probably 4 or 6 years) then resign if he's smart.

If he's as stupid as he seems, he'll make more waves in public and get court martialed and discharged over it.

What I don't get is this guy's choice to attend the USMA. The service academies are very demanding, both academically and physically. It's not uncommon for cadets/midshipmen to attend their classes standing out of fear of falling asleep if they sit. If this guy doesn't feel loyal to the US, then why attend a service academy, when there are tons of easier ways to earn a bachelor's degree cheaply?

Excelent thread idea.

I posted this in another thread a couple of hours prior, but meant to do it as a thread topic, so kudos to you.
http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forum...4&postcount=16

It should be noted that there are two issues here;

First; is the violation of UCMJ by making a public display of inappropriate wearing of the uniform of the U.S. Army (military). This would be an equal violation if he had displayed something "pro-Trump" and had flashed a MAGA ~ "Make America Great Again" t-shirt.

Second is his choice of theme. Che' along with other Communist idols of the Left, such as Lenin, Stalin, Mao, etc. is an endorsement of an ideology that has killed more humans than the Nazis ever did. Imagine had he displayed an image of Hitler or the Confederate "Stars-n-Bars" flag we might have heard some outrage from the "Left".

Surprised this dufus made it into West Point and then graduated. Also surprised he never was on receiving end of a "blanket party" by his fellow classmates. Expect his career in U.S. Army/military and Guv'mint service to be short lived.

He's not in the USMC ~ Marine Corps, he's in the U.S. Army and is in a West Point cadet uniform. Once again you seem to fail on the details.
