Woomera to reopen?

I can remember when Britain took her rockets all the way to Australia to launch at Woomera

Its just political smoke and mirrors. The latest stuff up is the natural gas debacle. Corrupt politicians allowed 3 gas multinationals to build gigantic LNG export plants. The end result, Australia is now the worlds second largest LNG exporter but locally gas prices and shortages have threatened the local industry.

Wouldn't go that far. Australia has always featured prominently in astronomy (Parkes,Honeysuckle Creek [Tidbinbilla] etc ) so a "Space Programme"would seem to be a logical progression.
Woomera was never really closed however. The range there has been used as a low-level weapons proving ground on occasion.

Don't get me started on the energy situation though, the politicians we're blessed with couldn't organize the proverbial ****-up in a brewery.

(I rendered **** in full:- apologies, but it's a sore point)

Well, it will be actually, as our new space agency will, in the words of the government Minister responsible be called the "National Australian Space Agency".

See the video @0:40

To think that in the 1960's Australia was only the third country(besides the USA/USSR) able to launch satellites into space.....and we let this capability die.

There were suggestions from some quarters that it should be called the Australian Research and Space Exploration but for some reason the gov doesn't think it's appropriate. Personally given the lack of detail in the media releases to date including minor details like funding at this point in time the whole thing seems more like a plot line out of the ABCs 'Utopia' TV program than a concrete commitment to the aerospace sector.
