Cpt Birds looks at Bates and smiles:

"Well, Mr Bates, I do not think you will need to be worried about your men being shot at while Pruitt, Leroy and I are North of the river making a nuisance of ourselves to the enemy.

" I hope your men will take that time to build and fortify your position to better hold its ground and defend the ford. I also hope that Pruitt, Leroy and myself, and all our men, will be able to count on your troops to stop the Yanks, as they will likely snap at our heels when we hurriedly cross back to the brigade main defensive line.

"Can we count on you and your troops, Mr Bates?"

Union Mills, 1120hrs

Captain Pruitt's Tarheels dismount and take up skirmishing positions in and around the houses and barns at the ford, trying to take potshots at the skirmishers across the river.

Gardner's Battery lumbers up onto the hill, and begins to unlimber and prepare to fire by the book (116RPG).

Lt. Col. Fawcett advances with his Grenadier Guards at the double quick to a position behind the grove just West of the ford.

Captain Leroy leads his Tigers forward just East of the road in Skirmish formation.

------

Colonel Sennef quickly decides his battle plan and details it to his commanders still nearby. He sends a runner to recall Fawcett's Grenadiers to their reserve position East of Signal Hill.

Captain Bates deploys his men into skirmish formation and prepares to move out, Captain Bird prepares and marches in column forward towards the ford, Captain Finch readies to move himself as well.

------

While the battle plan is being issued and units are shuffling, Pandemonium breaks out at the ford. Gardner's guns are almost ready to fire when he spies through his binoculars a column of blue practically jogging down the road. Pruitt's Tarheels open up a fire from the mill buildings, taking out several, but the column only leans into the modest fire from 70 carbines and rushes the ford with fixed bayonets.

Seeing a bayonet charge for the first time, the Tarheels let fly with a few pistol shots, but break and run for the rear, jumping out of the back doors and windows of the mill buildings as they make for their horses.

Gardner can see the color guard heralding a regimental formation farther back behind what looks to be three or more companies of infantry wading through the ford and pursuing Pruitt's men at the mill. Finally ready to fire, he opens up with both guns firing their first bolts of the engagement into the ford itself. One bolt goes harmlessly wide, while the other plows into the middle of the orderly crossing, snarling a company or more in a startled mass.

Two companies break off and move to secure the grove of trees to their right, only to find the Grenadiers beat them there. Fawcett's single line of kneeling men pour a volley into them, and the return volley at 100yds goes mostly high over the green-jacketed men in the brush, though a few do go down.

The Captains of these two companies bellow "Charge Bayonet!" and the companies rush the 100 yards to take the woods. Loading their Sharps furiously, the men prepare to give another volley when Fawcett shouts "Granata" in his North Carolina drawl. 100 grenades are lit and flung across about 20yards of ground. Some fail to burst, but those that do have an immediate effect on the companies reaching or just passing the little bombs they had ignored. Men fall to the ground clutching legs or bellies and the somewhat orderly bayonet charge staggers.

"FIRE" Fawcett hollers, and the Sharps Carbines crack again at targets they can't help but hit. Green Grenadiers witness their own firepower against equally green infantry, and the Federal companies reel in surprise. Leaping to his feet and drawing his sword and pistol, Fawcett springs forward shouting "Charge" and a line of splendid bearded men bursts from the underbrush with knives in hand......and the Federal companies break and race back to the ford in panic, Fawcett barely managing to rally his excited men back to the safety of the trees.

Meanwhile on the road, Pruitt is rallying his command still hotly pursued by a company, when he passes through Leroy's Tiger Rifles. The more experienced men in their ridiculous pantaloons kneel and open fire at targets as they bear, reaping a quick toll on the massed Federals. The union troops reel back as their officers move to reorganize......

Gardner's Battery fires its second shot of the day, the bolts both striking home on the ford and reaping a ghastly toll....the previously ordered advance is now just a seething mass with men running from Fawcett's counterstroke colliding with fresh companies moving into the ford, and both taking hits from the heavy rifles.

--------------

(That was the Union's Initiative at play.....fortunately it appears that with a couple of fortituous rolls, you've been able to stop their initiative and now things will settle down. Next orders deadline will be 2300EST Monday, and all units will be able to be in play)

We can't use case shot I think watching the fire What a magnificent target the Yankees would make for that. Our men are too close to the enemy.

"Gunners! Shell! Precussion fuze. Two degrees elevation, range nine hundred yards. Fire on the column coming down the road!"

The third salvo will still be shot as that's what the men are already loading. Then shell with a precussion fuze to be fired into the mass.

Fresh from glorious victory, the North Carolina Grenadier Guard receive the runner from Brigade recalling them to their reserve position east of Signal Hill. Eyeing the seething and confused mass of men taking fire in the ford and the full-scale Union advance, Fawcett shook his head in wonder. "Great work Guardsmen, look at them run! Hold position among the trees and be ready for them to try us again!" Each man having two granata on his person, they'd be able to repulse another charge in similarly magnificent style if the situation required.

He turned back to the runner and gestured to the open field speckled with clumps of blue jackets, particularly around that line 20 yards away. He motioned to the Federal companies struggling into the ford under heavy rifle fire. "Bring your observations of the situation to the Colonel along with my compliments. I respectfully acknowledge his orders, and we will be ready to retire to a reserve position once another company arrives to take the Guard's place in the battle line. I am honoured to remain his humble servant, etc." He gestures the runner away back to Brigade command and set himself to denying the enemy this strategic position. Though his blood boiled to strike into 'em again, he simply didn't have the numbers to strike the Federals in the ford with Guardsmen alone.

---

When the replacements arrive, the Guard filters back behind the wood and forms column, marching to the base of the hill and then across to the Colonel's position, under the guns. Flush with first victory, they sing that new martial song, 'We are a Band of Brothers' as they march. Twenty men are detailed to gather our wounded from the wood and bring them along to be tended to out of the line of battle.

"We are a band of brothers and native to the soil,
Fighting for the property we gained by honest toil..."

As Cpt Pruitt's Tarheels pass through them, the First Sergeant of the Louisiana Tigers sees the mass of Union crossing the ford he knows what the Captain is thinking and yells a command, "Time to make our money boys, don't rush, calculate distance, take aim, calm shots." The platoon sergeants and corporals repeat the order and took aim themselves. The Tigers are trained to prioritize targets on the fly and can adjust and re-aim in a second. Officers first, then buglers, runners and NCOs but in this haste men are firing as fast as they can at the dense mass of Union soldiers making their way across. Its not hard to make every shot count. The lieutenants and NCOs are trained to know when to advance and to fall back and can order teams, squads or their entire platoon to move. Cpt Leroy checks to see if 1st platoon has shifted up and sees that they already have, as he knows his platoon leaders are competent enough to know how, when and where to maneuver. He sees 2nd platoon has also shifted a little so that the Tigers are forming a right envelop on the advancing Union troops in the ford.

In teams of four we fire. Everyone knew who there teams were and where they were at all times. They would fire in volleys of one or two at a time while those who were reloaded and waiting to fire were spotting targets and relaying that information. The commander, executive officer, lieutenants (3), first sergeant and platoon sergeants (3) all had a pair of binoculars to keep an eye on foes and friend.

Finding cover and concealment was as important as maintaining the line. Those who couldn't fire from cover, would fire prone and if that wasn't practical they would get on a knee. You would never find a Tiger standing upright in a field unless he was hidden in a tall grasses or crops or charging with rifle butt or blade in hand. They could reload just as easily laying down, kneeling or standing. The velocity and accuracy of enemy fire dictated what position they assumed. Sometimes sticking one's neck out to get a visual was necessary. Large trees and chest high boulders were preferred as were ditches running along ridges or bluffs. Structures could be useful too but also a risk as anyone could hit the broadside of a barn.

The primary goal of Cpt Leroy's Tigers was to prevent the Union from crossing the ford but he was prepared to make a stand in order to buy time for the guns to adjust and the line troops to counter. Luckily the guns were dialed in and the Union didn't have to face a Tiger charge! His other option was to fall back east along the bank and try to lure them to follow me while Cpt Birds' men or our cavalry can hit the flank of the men pursuing me. Cpt Leroy didn't think the Union was that dumb however.

I'm loving the role play everyone. But if you could note your actual orders in very short form at the bottom, that'd be great. Thanks.....interpreting paragraphs is dangerous, I might screw up your intent.

flow of consciousness

Observing the battle next to Gardners artillery position on Signal Hill,
CS silently cusses the Union troops who have stolen the initiative from Rainbow.

"Phase One is down the drain.
No need to panick, no plan survives contact with the enemy.
Just continue with Phase two
He sends out riders to all company commanders":

Execute Phase 2!

Amending and clarifying previous orders:

Message to Brigade:

Colonel Sennef,

Three Federal companies have forced the ford and engaged the Tarhells and Grenadier Guard. Proud to report my men have routed two companies with minimal losses, and observe the Federal second wave struggling through the ford against heavy fire from the battery. I have received your orders to enter reserve, and we will be ready to fall back as soon as another company comes up to replace us in line.

I am honored to remain yr humble servant,

Lt. Col Fawcett

Stage 1: Before Relief

I lead two platoons east with a third close behind. 1st and 2nd Platoon form line and engage the west flank of the Federals fighting the Tigers from wnw, firing alternate platoon volleys into them for increased rate of fire. 3rd Platoon will form a loose line from our left facing the ford. If the Feds threaten our flank before we break Leroy's foes, 3rd Platoon will buy time for the rest of the company to join the north-facing line.

If we break Leroy's foes before anyone makes it out of the Ford (and before we are relieved) the Grenadiers form line of battle and advance to take the Federals in the ford under repeater fire at 150 yards.

Stage 2: On Relief

Once a company arrives to relieve us and/or secures the woods, the Grenadiers withdraw briskly through the copse to recover their wounded, then to the base of Signal Hill. Once safely under the heavy rifle's arc, they march to the eastern trees and the command post to rest in reserve. They (still) sing Bonnie Blue Flag as their marching song once they're formed out of sight of the enemy.

I send my Lieutenant to the Colonel with this message:

If the Yankees break our line, the battery will need infantry cover to give it time to withdraw. Otherwise we might lose the guns. They cannot be replaced so easily as a musket.

I await the Colonel's decision on whether to displace the guns or stay and fight. We continue to fire, switching to case (Shrapnel) shot on a 2 to 2 1/2 second fuze against the Yankees at the other side of the ford and up the road behind them.

After giving the orders to the men according to the wishes of the command, Bates hurries his Irregulars into the position to be ready to open fire at the attacking Federalists. With few shovels and tools they have, the men start to dig their fighting positions and move furniture, rocks and basically everything that moves to cover them.
