Lt. Col Fawcett snaps off a sharp salute, before stepping forward to introduce his fellow officer.

"Lt. Col Fawcett and Col. Sennef of the North Carolina Rainbow Brigade, General. We are an independent formation and our men are on the field two miles south of here and ready for action."

He gives a dry smile, generally aware that the morning's staff meeting would have to be postponed.

"How can we be of service?"

"Ahh, a North Carolina Brigade? Good." General Beauregard says, as an orderly digs through a stack of papers in a fruitless search to find anything naming 'Rainbow'.

"Captain James, tell General Ewell to pull his division off Union Mills and make for Henry House at his best speed. Tell him to depart immediately, a North Carolina Brigade will be taking his place on the right of our line".

The young captain takes off immediately to the East at a gallop, reins whipping his horse with urgency.

"Gentlemen, General Ewell is on our extreme right with a division at Union Mills. He was to have led our attack on Centreville, but McDowell's Army attacked at Sudley Ford first. They've been peeling back our Left and I'm sending all our reserves to Henry Hill to try to reestablish the line. I need Ewell's division there. Your brigade will to go Union Mills and hold the ford there. Get there quickly Colonel, if the Federals come across that ford they could dream of a double envelopment."

With that General Beauregard dismisses Col. Sennef and Lt. Col. Fawcett.

------------

Pre-Battle-Map question:

Will the Colonel have Rainbow deploy its Cavalry immediately to get to the ford as fast as possible.....or will he keep Rainbow together and arrive on the field at the best speed of the infantry and guns?

Lt. Col Fawcett proposes a compromise, with one cavalry formation flung forward at its best speed to scout and picket the crossing while the other screens a short distance in advance of our infantry column.

He will hasten back to the brigade at speed and order the whole formation to be ready to move out on the double. The grenadiers will be ready to lead the infantry to the ford, or I will know the reason why.

Forward, North Carolina!

I hate to be a wet blanket but our "brigade" is really a small Battalion. We have less than 500 men and are taking the place of a 5000 man Division. We could use some help!

The Tarheel Legion Cavalry is ready to take the lead.

ĎLincolnís Life or a Tigerís Death'

From out of the dusk came the sounds of drums, flutes and guitars and singing of cadence unintelligible at first, not because it was far away, but by how thick their accents were:

"Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:

Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.

Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

Our hearts so stout have got no fame
For soon 'tis known from whence we came
Where'er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.

Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
we'll make the mayor and sheriffs run,
we are the boys no man dare dun,
if he regards a whole skin.

Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

Our hearts so stout have got us fame,
for soon 'tis known from whence we came,
where're we go they dread the name,
of Garry Owen in glory.

Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory..."

The formation of men grew closer as did their noise, more akin to a bunch of happy men drunk than soldiers repeating cadence, and they showed it too with exaggerated salutes and hollering. While the formation wasn't disorderly, they all marched in step, what was strikingly obvious was their appearance. A riot of colors and an excess of billowing fabrics. It looked as if Algerian Zouave's had just arrived, but they spoke English of a sort and most looked as fair as any Swede. Each of them wore blood red shirts, the corporals and above had dark blue wool Zouave jackets with red cotton trim, outlandish blue and cream one-and-one-half-inch vertically striped cottonade ship pantaloons, blue and white horizontally striped stockings and white canvas leggings and atop their heads they wore red fezzes with red tassels although some had on broad flat rimmed straw hats while some officers had on red kepis and wore red sashes around their waists. They all carried a short rifled musket (M1841) and all had large knives or cutlasses at their hips. Atop a horse was their commander who wore red pantaloons of the same fashion as these fair skinned Zouave's.

The cadence stopped and a sergeant yelled mark time march followed by a halt and a left face. The commander dismounted, relieved the sergeant of the column and took the place of the sergeant and saluted the senior commander of the camp who had come over to see what all the ruckus was about.

"I am Captain Louis Augustus Leroy, commander of the Louisiana "Tiger Rifles", reporting for duty, sir." As the salute was returned the formation went at ease without a word. "We are 120 proud fighting men from the New Orleans and Texas/Louisiana Coast, most of them fought with me in the past or fought with some country before landing in Louisiana. I was born in Opelousas, LA, served with the Texas Rangers during the Texas Revolution, in the MexicanĖAmerican War and in the Texas-Indian wars. The men you see behind me are the finest men you never heard of but will soon. We have been training hard since January of this year and are experts at light infantry tactics, reconnaissance and even amphibious actions as most of our men are comfortable on boats. Where is the enemy and when can we get killin', my men are restless." Then they set up camp and many merry tales were told and rations drank.

Once I hear from the Colonel as to how he will deploy the Brigade for the approach march.....essentially will one or both cavalry troops race to the ford to establish a picket/skirmish line while the infantry and battery march up.....I'll post the map and the "Game is Afoot".

Update for Pruitt, since he's concerned about the size of the 'Brigade':

2 Pieces in Battery

140 Cavalry

620 Infantry

789 All Ranks.....

For 1861 this actually isn't too terribly bad for a provisional Brigade, a lot of them had 10 companies of iffy provenance. But keep in mind that while you don't have as many men, for the most part every company is substantially better equipped than they were historically in 1861. I think the 1841 Mississippi Rifles are the least modern weapons on the field. Anyway.....the general did say hold a ford, not assault Centreville......

Union Mills, 1000hrs

Union Mills Map

Captain Pruitt arrives on the field on the Road from the South. The balance of the Brigade will begin arriving within the hour. Upon arrival, Captain Pruitt does not see any of Ewell's Division in place, though there is plenty of sign of him hastily moving off to the West.

Captain Pruitt sights a few cavalry in blue riding North along the road from the area of the ford. The enemy is likely aware that Ewell's Division is no longer strongly holding Signal Hill.

There is no crossing to the East of this position, and other brigades are supposed to be covering the crossings to the West. If the Federals want to get through this flank they will have to do it here.

Rainbow Commanders: the general has attached an additional company to Rainbow.

120 European soldiers assembled in New Orleans under the Career Soldier Captain Leroy, armed with 1841 Mississippi Rifles and a variety of bowie knives and cutlasses. It is a light infantry unit with amphibious qualities making Rainbow even more Rainbow then it already was

Capt. Leroy welcome. Take your place in the order of March between Brigade stores and Gardnerís Battery. We march to Union Mills forge within the hour.

Captain Finch reigns in his horse as he takes position on a small elevation to watch his men march by.

Being the centre of the marching column now, the skirmisher platoon has re joined the company and seeing friendly units all around them clearly elevates their spirit.

They don't march like actual soldiers do, but the simple drill exercises of the past weeks seem to at least allow them to maintain their three-rank columns and mutual distance - albeit with a lot of effort from those appointed as sergeants who run around like sheepdogs, much to the enjoyment of the men.

When some of the men notice him they cheerfully wave their various headgear in a friendly if decidedly non-militaristic fashion.

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me..."

Finch hides his bitter thoughts behind a faint smile as he tips his head in reply.

"That's the same (empty) map we got this morning no ? (lower hyperlinks don't seem to work there ?)

Any idea as to the enemy ?

In general we deploy in front of the ford, 3 companies, left right center, all in measured distance so that the optimum weapon range reaches the opposite river bank.

Artillery same but further back, maybe hidden in the wood patches there.

Cavalry scouts the river banks on both flanks to find alternative crossings and guards them. (Or indeed does reconnaissance across)

And we keep a reserve to counter any movements of the enemy ?

Yes, that map.
The accompanying text stated the river can only be crossed here.

Good points most
esp. about reconnaissance (that's how we will get ideas about the enemy)
and keeping a reserve to counter enemy moves.
