Are British forces going to keep the SS-109 as their standard round? It's be a shame to upgrade their rifles only to keep firing the same old crap.

I'm surprised that the U.S. didn't aquire the FN FAL. Why didn't the Royal Marines take the Bren gun with them during the Falklands War.

We used the M14 instead. If you read all the posts, you would see that the RM did take their Bren guns.

How much does an FN FAL cost compared to an M14?

... were tested against each other in the US in the mid-50's as a replacement for the Garand M1; T44=M14, T48=FN FAL. It was close, but the he T44 won, although the tests were skewed a bit towards the T44; most of NATO went with FN FAL types. The AR-10 wasn't far behind, it's progeny the AR-15 as the M16 would replace the M14 in the mid-60's; it was cheaper than the M14.

M14 was designed with 7.62x51mm NATO in mind, while the FN FAL was designed around the 7x43mm (.280 British) and later beefed up to accommodate 7.62 NATO. Consequently the FN FAL's receiver is somewhat lighter, and loses accuracy at longer ranges over time. The other thing about the '14 was that it was designed to replace not only the M1 Garand, but also the BAR. In other words, it was meant to fulfill two distinct roles, which required a more heavily engineered piece than the FN FAL.

Also didn't the Marines look at the Stoner Type 63 light machine gun as a BAR replacement?

The Stoner came out well after the BAR was gone. If anything, it was to supplant the M60.

There was an M-14 version that was capable of firing automatically. The problem was it was too light to control! It had a folding buttplate. The Marines moved one of the Platoon M-60's to each of the squads. The Autorifle slot did not get filled until the M-16 came out. That caused problems when every troop selected full auto on their supposed semi-auto rifles.

The M14 was capable of being automatic, not just certain versions.

M15 and M14E2. It's really easy to google instead of asking a question in almost every post.
