Royal Marines use the M16/M4?

I was watching some footage of British Royal Marines assisting in disaster relief on Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands and at least 2 of the marines were carrying what appeared to be either M16 rifles or M4 carbines. I thought the British military had entirely switched over to the L85 series? Even the Bermuda Regiment now uses the L85.

Umm! The Royal Marine Commando have been using said weapon for years and years. The SBS and SAS have been using it too, as have the Gurkha rifles and Para's Pathfinder platoon.

It's lighter than the L85a2 which with optical sights full magazine and other add-ons, weighs in at 6.58 kg (14.5 lb) the M4 all up battle weight is about 2kg (4lb) lighter.

The reason it is used by the British special forces is because they can't rely on transport and have to be able to move as rapidly as possible on foot over any terrain thus anything that aids the reduction in weight carried with no detrimental effect on combat effectiveness, is a must. The M16 and M4 fit the bill perfectly, I used (M16) one for a while and it felt like a toy weight wise compared to the SLR and L85a1 that I used before, but I also had a worrying thought that if I sat on it accidentally it would bend in the middle. Great weapon though!

... Britain's Royal Marines, like the SAS and other British specialized units use the Colt Canada C7 & close quarters C8 CQB. My own service long gun was the C8.

Yes, sort of. They normally have H&K steel mags but they are interchangeable although with the Magpul P-Mags you may have to use the Gen-3 instead of the Gen-2.

In my day we used Colt then R.G (Radway green) with the L85/L86 LSW, which though fed better, had a black plastic base which had a button that was pushed in and allowed the magazine base to be slid out for magazine maintainance. Some users (I never had a problem) seem to have had the bottom pop out and the spring and rounds shooting out of the bottom.

The Colt magazine had a flat plate at the bottom which had a notch in it which allowed for the plate to be removed by either using a coin or the edge of the cleaning kit combi tool.

Didn't the Royal Marines use the M-16 during the Falklands War back in 1982?

They had SLRs.

Some of the SAS teams may have used US M-16.

... the Fabrique Nationale, Fusil Automatique Léger, i.e. FN FAL, 7.62×51mm, or as Capt. says, SLR's i.e. L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle in NATO parley. The Argentines were full auto capable.

I heard during the Falklands War that British soldiers and marines would try and get their hands on Argentinian FALs to use as light machine guns since they were no longer using the BREN gun.

The Royal Marines still had the Bren. In fact, in one history that I read from one of the Commando commanding officers, they took all their Brens and Gimpys, while normal TO&E was one or the other.

Yes! That was a lessons learned from the Falklands. After the war, many Western armies' infantry sections (squads) and platoons got more machinegun firepower to pin down the enemy, so that the rest of the troops would have an easier time to maneuver and close with the enemy.

...The funny thing after the Falkland War, if you happen to attend a lecture or course with a British officer teaching or simply attending, there would be almost always and automatically a comment by him starting with "Well, what we learn/did in the Falklands was..."

We (my unit) were still using the L4 LMG (7.62mm version of the BREN) up to about 1996, we had 6 on strength (I loved em!). The only other weapon we used that was any sort of throwback to WWII was the Browning Hi power 9mm semi automatic pistol (I loved that too!) which has since been replaced by the Glock. We waved goodbye to the Sterling SMG at about the same time as the SA80 (L85a1 & L86 LSW) replaced the much lamented SLR.
