I was unaware that the Orban government maintains an air of socialism.

A fair amount of EU funding goes into projects not benefiting Hungary per se but rather European corporations that have invested in Hungary, such as a new metro line connecting to the transportation network leading to the new Budapest suburban commercial districts of European big box stores and the new M43 highway to Romania.

Careful - we're nearing familiar ground here

So you you figure Orban is a Right Wing Liberal ?

Joking aside, people love it when politicians spend money, less money to spend, equals less popular politicians.

It is really very simple.

What? The EU has that kind of control over these countries. Time to band the EU and preserve one's county while protecting their citizens.

I think this would allow the EU Commission to start cutting their structural funds if they don't take their quotas. There isn't much they can do except threaten to leave. Which I doubt they would. Slovakia and Czech Rep. already seem to be splitting the Visegrad 4 by adopting a pro-EU stance.

I will correct this one : not "people", but "stupid and jealous people " .

Stupid people who forget that every euro the government is spending, comes out the pocket of a tax-payer ;

Jealous people who want the government to spend money of their neighbour for them .

Economist (= stupid people ) who think that government spending is boosting the economy .

The government pays your pension does it not ?

Imagine for a moment it stopped paying your pension, or halved it,

like happened in Greece ?

13 965 posts at the ACG wouldn't be enough to tell us about it.

You're privileged and you don't even know it, much like Orbans' voters.

No it doesn't, perhaps your should read the rest of the thread.

YOUR federal government does have that kind of control over the states though, despite your treasured constitution.

Pat Condell?

He tells it Damn Straight!

It's a sad indictment of Western society that someone like him, without any political power, needs to step up and tell it like it really is.

What is worse, is that based on the way things are progressing, he is risking potential arrest(and from what I have seen elsewhere actual suppression/censoship of his messages) for expressing these views.

What an absolutely disgraceful situation that has been allowed to develop.

Thankfully, Australia is some way behind Europe - but we are on the same road.

I figure he's a hypocrite - happily spending EU money with one hand, while engaging in anti-EU campaigns with the other.

Both will increase his popularity and neither requires any great political talent or strength of character.

"There is no possibility to set the question of immigration as a precondition for the allocation or distribution of EU funds," said Orban, who has kept immigration on top of his political agenda since 2015. " Such a correlation is illegal."
Is it now ?

Seems to me it would be not only legal, but perfectly logical that if the EU has to spend money to deal with a migration flow in the Med, it would spend less elsewhere.

If there was no correlation it would indeed be amazing.

By the same token, if Hungary has to spend money to deal with thousands of illegal immigrants crossing its border, it has a right to demand compensation from the EU.

Well yes, it's just it doesn't actually contribute anything useful.

Building a fence inside the EU does nothing to keep migrants out of the EU.

Instead of Hungary they are now in Greece, Romania, Serbia etc...which to anybody not Hungarian is really just the same.

Serbia is not part of the EU. Hence, the Hungarian fence, built along the Hungarian-Serbian border, is not inside the EU, but is actually constructed along the EU border and thus is indeed keeping migrants out of the EU. The Hungarian fence also compelled Croatia to construct a similar fence along its border with Serbia - even though the Croatian government had criticized Hungary when the Hungarian fence was first being built.

What about the Romanian border then ?

If we're going to pay for a fence, I want it to be a great fence, the biggest fence ever

Incidentally, reading the wiki article on your fence, I saw this,

Quote:
On 31 August 2017, the Hungarian government requested that the European Union refund half of the border barrier costs (€400 million).[25] This request was denied by the President of the European Commission on 5 September 2017.[26] The Court of Justice of the European Union dismissed Hungary and Slovakia's claims in a judgment dated 6 September 2017. [27]
Thus it appears that, far from ruling the EU has the right to impose migration quota on member states, it simply ruled that the EU does not have to pay for an Hungarian fence.

That's probably why the thread title changed over the week-end, or was that the title of the linked article in OP
