Maybe not a fighter plane but the C-47 was used as a flare ship and as a ground attack aircraft like the AC-130.

DC -3 family - Used by so many air forces including the Japanese in WW2 (license built version) so on both sides

However if you want versatility then the old Avro 504 - bomber, recce, artillery spotter, long range fighter, night fighter, suicide attack (Japanese army license built),transport, trainer, squadron hack. In service somewhere 1913 -1945

It ended up with the C47 vs the C130 and the C47 won.
I try to search for old threads...but a lot of times, it gives me some crazy stuff

You mean something like this:

pinnochio.jpg

Quote:
"Pinocchio The C-47 Dakota was employed in the Canadian Forces from 1945 to 1989, during which time a total fleet of 160 Dakotas accumulated 1,426,686 flight hours. The Dak flew a multitude of missions including: arctic re-supply; delivering mail to Canadian troops overseas; flying the Burma hump; towing gliders and targets; dropping parachutists; mercy flights; search and rescue; UN peacekeeping; photo reconnaissance; and a variety of other tasks.

Pinocchio was enlisted in the RCAF in 1944 as EN 979; however, it was not until 1962 that she was modified, along with two other Dakotas, and received
her distinctive CF-104 Starfighter nose.

The nose cone contained a radar operated by a console in the passenger cabin and was used to introduce abinitio Starfighter pilots to radar navigation."

Mountain Man has disabled reputation
[QUOTE=Moulin;3398228]what do you think is the most used plane that has been around for a long time?
would it be the B 52, C-130, ?? or any others?
..I'm guessing the C130 being not a cargo plane but also an attack aircraft--used by many nations
...I'm not talking so much as how many--.but used in action or for their purpose...ie: there might not be as many C130s as there are F15s....but the C130s are used for cargo hauling etc during peacetime, where as the F15's purpose is to fight during war
thanks all replies[/Q]

DC3/C47 would be my guess. Even served as a combat aircraft in 'Nam.

"The C-130 entered service with the U.S. in the 1950s, followed by Australia and others. During its years of service, the Hercules family has participated in numerous military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations. In 2007, the C-130 became the fifth aircraft—after the English Electric Canberra, B-52 Stratofortress, Tupolev Tu-95, and KC-135 Stratotanker—to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary customer, in this case, the United States Air Force.[citation needed] The C-130 Hercules is the longest continuously produced military aircraft at over 60 years, with the updated Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules currently being produced"

This debate will evolve as the C130 soldiers on and its strong argument becomes a stranglehold.

I would probably say both the B-52 and the C-130 given that they both entered sevice at the height of the Cold War.
