Most used, enduring military plane

what do you think is the most used plane that has been around for a long time?
would it be the B 52, C-130, ?? or any others?
..I'm guessing the C130 being not only a cargo plane but also an attack aircraft--used by many nations
...I'm not talking so much as how many--but used in action or for their purpose...ie: there might not be as many C130s as there are F15s....but the C130s are used for cargo hauling etc during peacetime, where as the F15's purpose is to fight during war
thanks all replies

It would either be that, or the DC-3 "GooneyBird" or Dakota or whatever.

As late as the mid-1960s, 2/3rds of the world's air cargo was carried by them, and the last one wasn't retired from the USMC until 1981.

wiki says still in use for civilians ...must be a great design/engineering, considering still in use
that is a good one...I see the C130 has over 75 countries that it is/was operated by where as the O1 is about 21...? probably still using them I would guess

We agree on something, at least;

The Army toast their Skytrain,
In lousy scotch and soda.
The Tommies raise their tankards high,
And cheer their old Dakota.
Some say the C-47's best,
Or the gallant R4D.
Forget that claim,
They're all the same,
The noble DC-3.

I saw one of these in Honduras in 1990--being used...if I identified it correctly

I know that Moulin wasn't around at the time, but we just had a whole tournament about this last year.
http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forum...393&order=desc
It ended up with the C47 vs the C130 and the C47 won.

DC-3. Every war, every time. It's been there, done that. I'm surprised someone didn't try to make a fighter plane out of it...

C-47/DC-3.

I agree with most here.

I believe the South African Air Force was using them for maritime patrol until quite recently.

The Canadian Forces still had a couple of them flown by its Air Reserve on domestic air photo missions until the early 80s.

Yes, the Dakota to us, had cause to be in one on two occasions 44 onwards. No comforts of course, sitting on the deck with your gear stacked down the middle. Length of service is the highest recommendation. lcm1

Some DC-3's in forgotten corners of the world still have original parts in them! That is 70 to 80 years!
