Sanctions starting to bite?

https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-9767116
(in Finnish)

A russian man is caught trying to smuggle a hundred kilos of cheese from Finland to Russia.

Seems silly...that the result of war in Ukraine is that you can't bring a hundred kilos of cheese from Finland to Russia. Maybe time to get rid of the sanctions?

Well it's a humorous example, probably not the best one. The US sanctions (especially the last round which is very severe) are affecting business and trade in Russia and they are hurting Putin's "middle class" (they probably wouldn't be called middle by Western standards).

During the best years of Putin's economy the middle class acquired a false sense of prosperity and took loans to finance expensive purchases, like expensive autos and apartments. Those people are worst struck by the sanctions because they caused loan interest rates to skyrocket, especially the ones with adjustable rates.

People saw their interest payments increase many time over, and they are facing bankruptcy.

The biggest problem with the Russian economy is lack of confidence in the economy and the currency. People refuse to spend money, thus causing business failure, layoffs, etc. It's a vicious cycle, just like the behavior of American markets in 2008.

What sanctions ? They are evaded by most countries ,especially by those from Western Europe: a German SPD minister protested against the new US sanctions, because they would hurt the German economy .

I guess, Russian domestic producers are preying every day for that not to happen. And besides protectionist effect Russian food sanctions were introduced in response to European ones. As a matter of principle Russia will certainly not lift own counter-sanctions while European sanctions are in force. In its turn Europe is reluctant to lift sanctions without Ok from the Big Boss. An given the present political climate in the USA that Ok seems very unlikely in the nearest years.

Don't know about Finnish situation but at Russian-Baltic or Russian-Polish border smuggling have been a constant phenomenon since time immemorial. Mostly gasoline and cigarettes.

Booze, cigarettes and gasoline has been a constant throughout the years, not cheese though. Even the smuggled cheese gets destroyed the same though.

There used to be pretty intensive butter smuggling traffic along the Belgian/Dutch border here into the 50s - don't quite know why though, may have had to do with tariffs.

https://anderetijden.nl/programma/1/...7/Botersmokkel

Edit, according to the source above, Dutch butter production was subsidized allowing them to produce it at 1/3 the price compared to Belgium.

If you live close enough to a border any price difference can turn a profit.

Before Ireland joined the EU the smuggling of many products across the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland was considerable - particularly dairy and beef products where subsidies could be claimed fraudulently. It's concern that this might become the case again with Brexit that's helping banjax the current negotiations

Or perhaps something like Epoisses de Bourgogne which stinks so much it is banned from public transport in France - perhaps it was the Russians who did not want it entering Mother Russia

I'm a cheese lover, as such I have enjoyed fine cheeses from many places, but I can honestly say I have never heard of good cheese from Russia.
