Dunkirk - too much maleness and no plot...
Quote:
my main issue with Dunkirk is that it's so clearly designed for men to man-out over. And look, it's not like I need every movie to have "strong female leads." Wonder Woman can probably tide me over for at least a year, and I understand that this war was dominated by brave male soldiers. I get that. But the packaging of the film, the general vibe, and the tenor of the people applauding it just screams "men-only"—and specifically seems to cater to a certain type of very pretentious man who would love nothing more than to explain to me why I'm wrong about not liking it. If this movie were a dating profile pic, it would be a swole guy at the gym who also goes to Harvard. If it was a drink it would be Stumptown coffee. If it was one of your friends, it would be the one who starts his sentences with "I get what you're saying, but..."

Shoehorning some women into the event would have been called pandering. "You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but in the end they can all just **** off."

Have to do it so .In IMax this time.

And you , Brits and Us , try to find out "week end in Dunkirk" , the 1964 french movie , with Belmondo. It fairly depicts the relationship between English and French forces there , or at least was praised for.

Anybody had a go at 'Gun Buster's' books about Dunkirk. I've just re-read them and there's definite echoes of Nolan's take on the evacuation.

It must be well over 40 years since I read them - borrowed from the local library.

I don't.
See post #62. It is pure garbage from start to finish (the article, I mean) and it is also a perfectly accurate reflection of how people in Hollywood think.
That is who controls who gets Oscars, and it is nothing new.
After all, Sleepless in Seattle beat Saving Private Ryan in 1999, so figure the odds.

You assume too much.

Given my close proximity to this place:
http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/ , about 15 years ago I've had the fortune to be involved in the restoration process of 3 world war two aircraft...granted on a very minor level, but enough to learn through discussions and some access to the restoration teams about the breakdown of aircraft parts through metal fatigue and corrosion. I was able to participate due to my donations of aircraft parts I once owned as part of my personal collection, including:

Martin B-26 Marauder (almost complete left landing strut, sans wheel)
Lockheed P-38 Lightning (rudder control pedals)
Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero (60% complete instrumentation panel - panel was modern reproduction, I donated the various instruments)

I also donated an artificial horizon instrument for a Me-262.

While many of the aircraft in the museum are considered "functional", they are not airworthy. Combat stresses on certain parts such as spars, plus aileron, elevator, and rudder mechanisms, landing gear stresses and corrosion of electrical wirings and control wires are biggest factors in grounding an aircraft. "Stretched" riveting via stresses between frame and covering is also a factor. In wartime these parts are regularly maintained and replaced as needed. Most "restoration" of such aircraft today involves primarily halting the corrosion process for static displays. Bringing an aircraft to airworthiness involves replacing entire parts with replacement units using more up-to-date methods which must also meet modern flight requirements and regulations. Simply strengthening old parts will not suffice. Many vintage warbirds which are considered "airworthy" today are made with so many modern replacement parts, they could almost be considered reproductions.

Many people would be very surprised to learn, that even placing a vintage aircraft on static display, can place stress on the aircraft.

Taking a 70+ years old vintage aircraft and putting it through combat stresses places the aircraft, and it's pilot(s) in grave danger.
