Austria to phase out Eurofighter

Quote:
The country’s 15 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft would be taken out of service from 2020, the defence ministry in Vienna said on Friday. It blamed spiralling costs and the jets’ military limitations.

Slightly embarassing for the Eurofighter consortium.

If I remember correctly the Tranche 1 aircraft are getting old and limited to air combat/intercept mainly or even only. Aren't the British already phasing out their Tranche 1 aircraft?

Yeah, I've read on another forum that it's really hard to upgrade the Typhoon. I guess that's supposed to be one of the assets of the F35, that most of the future upgrades will be plug and play. I'm sure Pitchrate would know more about that.

Tranche 1s, yes. Tranche 2s, less so. Why on earth they bought the in the first place, heaven only knows.

A strength of US aircraft for a very long time; you can drag the coat-tails of a largely guaranteed investment and improvement programme.

I've heard Austria is considering either the F-16, the JASON-39 Gripen or the the F/A-18 Super Hornet. So what will happen to the Typhoons when the Austrians phase them out?

Sell the airframes to someone? Christ-knows; what a waste of money...

The airframes have very few flight hours. I have no idea if these aircraft would be economically upgradable to late versions.
If the price is low enough someone will bite. I could see Saudi Arabia buy them, maybe Kuweit.

The Austrian govmnt was quite pissed that they paid way too much for the aircraft. The deal is surrounded by fraud and bribery.

The Gripen NG would be more appropriate for the job, allowing the Austrians to train more pilots as well, and provide a decent air to ground capability.

I doubt Austria will chose the F-35.

Agreed, the Gripen seems to be a viable alternative... maybe a lease agreement.

No NGs for lease afaik. And Sweden is running out of C/Ds for the purpose too. If Austria wants them, they need to buy, as the production line is being set up.

There's currently a bit of a wrangle over whether the current fleet of C/Ds should be cannibalised for parts, meaning some minor cost-reduction to the new fleet of NGs, or retained to bolster the numbers of the Swedish fighter fleet? In either case, they shouldn't be assumed to be available (Sweden will keep or scrap them). The only reason this fleet of leasable Gripens was available in the first place, was that the Swedish airforce ordered a Cold War complement of 250 machines, of which Sweden currently only operates 100 (continuously upgraded).

Thx for the info'.
Is the airforce reducing the number of airfields and cost cutting in other areas?

Interesting: on what basis was the DRAKEN (another brilliant SAAB aircraft) operated by Austria ?

They bought them.

Apparently due to WWII Austria by treaty was prohibited from operating AA missiles, which led to them buying the first generation Draken A, rather than one of the later upgrades, since the A version had a set up with a double AKAN, i.e. more firepower, while the later versions had only one.

Draken was successfully exported a number of times. It's successor Viggen however had an export sales figure of literally 0. Seems it usually got clobbered by aggressive US marketing in the 1980's.
