Task Force Rainbow, Ep. 1 "Necessities"

Singapore
24 December, 1941

The Captains of the remaining unassigned warships in Singapore Harbor meet. Air Marshal Brooke-Popham looks at them in turn.

"Gentlemen, the situation is what it is. We are losing ground on all fronts here in Malaya. Our governments are meeting as I speak to organize a joint command for defending Malaya, Java, the Philippines, and so against the Japanese.

Just two weeks ago, we attempted to stem the tide by sortieing Force Z. By a combination of rotten luck and bad tactics, those ships were lost. Unfortunately, the reason for sending them out remains, we need to, we must hit their landing beaches and make effort to slow their advance so our own ground forces can firm up a defensive line. Your ships represent the only striking power available, our few destroyers on station are escorting cargo ships getting civilians out of the area along with bringing in materiel for the defense.

Your mission will be to sail to the area of Kota Bharu and raid their landing beach areas. We have little recent intelligence, but anticipate that their naval forces there will be modest after recent successes. I have no fewer than three sorties in force of Buffaloes to provide your task force with air cover, we did learn something from that bloody mess on the 10th.

Well chaps, you have a day (OOC: much more than that really) to organize yourselves and put to sea, let's get to it."

Kota Bahru... the very place.
Well, if they really are ready to deploy those fighters, it should give them a break from those deadly torpedo bombers that seemed to be able to fly halfway to the Moon and back.

Captain Kruger had been called back from the verge of retirement to take command of the New Orleans. Having spent half of the 1920s and most of the 1930s in the China station, he was suddenly deemed indispensable after having been passed over for Admiral.
And Singapore sure it a long way from China.
Still active and athletic in his 50s, Kruger is entirely bald-headed and has a snow-white goatee that clashes with his sun-darkened skin.

A Texan, he finds it ironic that he has been assigned to ship named for New Orleans, while the Houston is just a few hundred miles away.
Such is the rumor, at any rate.

"Well, Marshal, if your planes can cover us, maybe we should make a nighttime run to the landing area timed to arrive at dawn. Our gunners can spot land-based targets more easily with the sun behind us. Are there any air-recon photos of the area?"

Captain Pruitt has a question. Where are the latest recon photos of Kota Baru? My bet is the Japanese are not putting many transports there after they dropped off the invasion force. It would be easier to land supplies a little North in Siam. They did make a landing there and beat the Indian Army to the bottleneck on the road into Malaya.

What I want to avoid is chasing the IJN and sailing into a trap. The airfields in South Indochina have already shown they can put a lot of bombers into the air. Also we need to avoid sailing into restricted waters where we can't maneuver when we are attacked by these bombers. The good news is I doubt we are going to be the biggest target out there! Our Friends the Free French have that honor. What kind of formations will we use if attacked by air?

Captain Pruitt speaks with a touch of a Louisiana accent. He is the son of a Naval Officer and his Grandfather was a Chief Petty Officer who jumped ship off a Navy Vessel in New Orleans. It seems the Commanding Officer of the ship had just received a letter from his wife telling him that the daughter was in the family way and where was the Chief Bosun's Mate? The Chief eventually married into a well to do French Family.

Captain Pruitt

"Captain Kruger, I just want to make sure that you understand. With what I've got available, I can put up three sorties of Buffaloes. I can't keep planes over your head for hours, and it will take two hours for planes to reach Khota Bharu from here. Also, while they're no threat to your ships, the Japanese fighter cover has been firming up and is a bloody nightmare for my pilots"

Captain Marzin is a man of general competence, cool courtesy and quiet arrogance. He is also a man whose father fought in the trenches at Verdun, and whose home and country now lay in the hands of the Boche while he sails on the other side of the planet. In short, he is not a man of unlimited patience.

"I saw a number of vessels out there in the harbour, Air Marshal. Not that the cargo convoys are unimportant, but are you certain you cannot scrounge up another destroyer or two for the handful of days we will be out there?" Marzin spent some time in London before the war, and his accent is there, but intelligible enough to most English speakers.

"My thought is this; we do not need air cover to deal with these gnats unless they swarm. Captain Kruger's approach is well taken. Presuming we time our approach to Kota Bharu with nautical twilight at 0630, we can make most of our approach in the safety of darkness and some distance out from the coast. One sortie performing a fighter sweep over the beaches at 0630 will help to blind their spotters, and perhaps we can hold the other two in reserve for a rainy day?" A small smile here.

"Richelieu has been here a few days now, and we have almost completed the resupply. We should be able to recall shore leave and top off our bunkers by noon, if you gentlemen are all ready to wish the beaches a joyeux noŽl?"

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say welcome aboard Mr Noodle!

Any views on what manner of vessel you would like to steer into harm's way? So far I believe the TF can maintain a sustained 30 knots, so weigh that when you're doing a little research/shopping

Also, unlike TF Z, we actually have some limited air cover if we want it.

What could go wrong?

"Captain Pruitt, very good questions. Unfortunately I don't have answers for them. Our air force has been beaten quite thoroughly over the Japanese lines. I don't have a recent photograph of their landing beaches, though I presume that they are continuing to drop supplies and troops there because the road network is so poor in the region. Naturally if you think you can exceed your orders and bombard ports, feel free to do so, but your orders are only to strike the beaches."

Captain Krueger can field this to save the Marshal some time -
(might as well have the old-had be useful for something)

"Force Z went out into the waters south of Vietnam at night, hoping to intercept the convoys. The Nips managed to avoid them, and so on the way back they headed to the coast to check out a report that there had been a landing at Kuantan. There was not, but they were near the coast when they were spotted and hunted down by twin-engine torpedo planes... close to a hundred of them.
As for the bombing of this place, there was a real raid on the 8th, but nothing since then aside from sporadic raids, mainly light hit & run stuff on outlying bases. The city itself hasn't been hit since then, so we are actually better off here than we would be at the naval base up at Sembawang."

He looks to the Marshal for confirmation of that, and adds;
"I have a question of my own. I want to leave 2 of my 4 scout-planes here in Singapore." His accent makes it sound more like Songapar. "On call for my own use, but if I don't return then they would be yours, of course."

I might leave a couple of my Scout Planes here as well. There will be one on each catapult ready to take off. I bet the Japanese were shadowing Task Force Z all night with their Float Planes.
