Yeah, ditto!

Two freaking miles ?!?

Tanks being able to hit each other at that range is problematical, especially for some armies out there...

And no, gents, you don't 'spray & pray' with a bolt-action rifle. You have to take one deliberate shot at a time, and you also can't carry enough of those 50-cal rounds to just keep banging away all day, that ain't what this was either.

And from the article-
Quote:
The soldiers is said to have only taken a single shot to take down his man, living up to the gun manufacturer CheyTac's motto of 'Make every shot count'.
But, no details yet...

Bummer.

If his spotter and him had walked a couple of spotted shots into him, I'd say it was skill. If he actually connected on the first shot, there was a whole lot of luck going on there.

Well, the first one being that the target would have to be stationary for the whole time the bullet is in the air. The rest is just calculating trajectory.

Interesting interview with Craig Harrison on the BBC this morning. When he made his record breaking kill he had no expectation of a hit at that range. He said that he was trying to make the Talbani keep their heads down and making a hit was sheer luck.

Interesting comment was that at that range the speed of the earth's spin has a material effect on the bullet's spin so one has to adjust for latitude.

He also said that as a result of all the media hoo ha afterwards he and his family had to move into protected housing for two years and the security forces (Mi5?) thwarted a plot to kidnap and behead him.

Harrison took out two targets with his AWM .338 at 2,700 yards so no such luck there then?

Liberals increase anti-ISIS commitment ...

... despite Opposition furore over sniper's record hit consideration as a combat role.

Canada to extend anti-ISIS mission by 2 years

Extension comes as controversy rages over whether operation involves active combat

"Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland announced the renewed contribution to the international coalition today in a news release.

The mission, which will continue the "advise and assist" role, will now go to March 31, 2019.

NATO to increase number of troops in Afghanistan again
The extension includes providing training for new potential partners within the Iraqi security forces and a CC-130J Hercules aircraft for tactical airlift.

"Our new defence policy has made it very clear that Canada is ready and willing to do its part for the global community," Sajjan said in a statement. "This includes confronting security issues that threaten our shores and those of our allies and partners. We must continue working with the Global Coalition against Daesh and to address the security challenges which confront Iraq, Syria and the region."

The extension comes as debate rages over whether Canada is actually involved in active combat in northern Iraq, after a Canadian special forces sniper shot an ISIS fighter from a record 3,540 metres, the longest confirmed kill shot in military history.

This week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that was to be celebrated, and it was "entirely consistent" with Canada's advise and assist role.

On Thursday, Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Jonathan Vance said he is "extremely proud" of the CAF accomplishments in the region.

"As the situation on the ground evolves, we must continually re-evaluate how Canada's military can be most effective in support of the coalition," he said. "I am confident these additional authorities will help us be more agile and flexible as we respond to the needs of our allies and partners."

To my fellow Canadians who consider the LONG shot by, a Canadian Forces Marksman, to be unsporting, ungentlemanly and not a nice thing to do to a ISIS fighter who was about to lead a raid.......what exactly do you think soldiers are trained to do, these guys are NOT Social workers with guns contrary to what the NDP and Greens think, what exactly do you want the lads to be equiped with," Good will T shirts,Pop guns with corks, Lets be nice to ISIS" written on troopers helmets.....These shooters are the best of the best and looking after their comrades.....IF the NDP and others have the balls to walk in these guys footsteps ( which I doubt) let them go to where the fight is, not hiding in the bar at your hotel boozing it up on your expense account, go to where the combat zone is and support our troops........but this is not the political way....No matter what party is "in" they are willing to send troops to every s....hole in the world but then abandon them when things go pear shape...

Good on the shooters do it again
