What determims how much a hecopter can lift?

I looked up the power to weight ratio of three helicopters. The Orxy of south Africa, USA black Hawk and Russian MI17. The orxy power to weight is higher than the other two. By being lighter than either with a engine a bit more power full than the black hawk. Yet both carry more than the Orxy if yo compare empty weight and max take of weight.

My BIL's brother opted for CH-47s because "they can lift their own weight in guns and ammo." Sounded like a plan to me.

There are essentially two factors engine power and rotor design. In the latter case there are design trade offs to be made for example lifting power over forward speed. These can be affected by such elements as blade chord and which options the designer chooses will very much depend on the mission profile the helicopter is intended to be able to perform. There are efforts in progress to gain more flexibility by developing variable chord blades so that the operator can choose for example to lift more at the cost of travelling more slowly.

Power-to-weight ratio, altitude, temp, humidity. Helos in desert conditions can't lift as much because the air is thinner. Cold air is denser and better. Each take off requires a lift calculation, just like the one required for every passenger jet, to determine what the take off parameters will be based on conditions, fuel, weight and so forth, and whether or not they can meet them.

In 'Nam, Huey pilots had to learn to bounce their birds into the air to get them up with the load of a full squad by sliding forward, lifting up, dropping down and bouncing off the skids in order to get airborne. This often required several bounces and skid failures were common since they weren't designed for that level of stress.

Power to weight, Rotor design, Atmospheric Conditions, Fuel State, and airframe design. Some birds aren't made to lift much externally, and the mounts just aren't made for heavy sling loads. Pilot skill is also a factor, as the longer you hover to hook up, the closer you get to Vortex Ring State and a loss of lift. You can start losing lift before you get to the point that it would otherwise be dangerous to the bird to continue hovering, so the heavier the load, the less time you want to be sitting there waiting for the HST to hook up.

Atmospherics and weather etc should affect the carrying capacity of all helicopters and I think what the OP is asking is what determines why one type of helicopter can lift more than another all external factors being equal

As their flight hours accumulated the South Africans became increasingly taken with the Russian helicopter in comparison to what they had flown in the SAAF. Tait said, "and it could do with Western avionics and a more ergonomically-designed cockpit lay-out, but it is far superior to just about anything else in its weight class in a hot and high environment and is capable of carrying heavier loads.

In some respects the Oryx compares favourably to the Mi-17. It is approximately 10,000 pounds lighter at maximum all up weight and can carry comparable loads at reasonable distances. The Oryx's shortcomings versus the Mi-17 are its limited cargo space and the need for many more skilled technicians to keep it maintained properly. Whereas the Mi-17 is a very rugged and robust helicopter with good serviceability in the field and capable of taking a real hammering-qualities that saved our lives more than once-the Oryx needs far more pampering and TLC. The reliability of these Russian helicopters was fortunate, as the maintenance facilities in Angola were of a very poor standard, or non-existent. -South African merc pilot
