Though far from reasonably reliable, the fact of it is much!

Now we need to vastly improve on the smart rocks & get even more intensive to the advent of brilliant pebbles.

It's a good start but still a way to go - with nuclear warheads involved you need to be able to do it right every time. How any promising weapons systems have worked once and once only?

ICBM defence only really works against small scale attack. In the event of an all out attack, it would be too easy to overwhelm the defence, and also that's not taking into account the SLBM and cruise missiles.

Quite ironically if a general ICBM defence was put into service to protect the US, the predictable result would be that any adversary would just end up producing a lot more ICBMs to swamp the defence. So you'd end up in a situation where there'd be an awful lot more nuclear weapons aimed at the US.

It's a message to the Norks and the Iranians. Both are countries which want an intercontinental nuclear capability, and neither would be capable of the sort of build up to allow for a Soviet or American style nuclear strike by dozens or hundreds of missiles.

Just a nice way of telling them "We're closing on the point where we can swat the capability you've spent billions and years on.....and you have no possible hope of swatting our second strike."

What needs to be done is not just develop incterceptors, but hit to kill systems as well as lasers. On the laser end of thing the Pentagon needs to look developing smaller lasers that can be carried inside the bomb bay of either a B-2 or the Next Generation Bomber the B-21.

Lasers would seem like the right tool for the job when it comes to shooting down ICBMs. Only problem is they would have to be VERY powerful lasers in order to cut a path through the atmosphere to hit their target. i'm not even sure if it would be practical.

If you managed to package a laser system in such a way that it could be carried in a bomb bay I'm not sure that would help the situation. Bomb Bays face the wrong way.

I think the current missile based interceptors will be able to do a reasonable job in time. My understanding is the hardware is up to the job but the targeting software is lacking. Sensor latency is a big issue for the software. Generally you're tracking a very fast ICBM on one side of the world whilst you're trying to provide a targeting solution to an interceptor on the other. The target ICBM is passing through multiple tracking stations as it follows a course that only it knows. The computing power needed must be phenomenal.

Ideally you'd want a whole heap of low earth orbit satellites armed with lasers and missiles. Maybe machine guns and rockets as well. But I doubt there is enough money on the planet to fund such a system.

Mounting a laser inside the Bombay of a B-2 or B-21 should still be considered at least as a means of destroying ICBMs on the ground and they could be useful against anti ship missiles while they're still on their launchers.

Or you could just use a bomb. Hell of a lot cheaper. Your laser beam toting bombers aren't really missile defence systems but first strike weapons.

Really neither but pin point precision weapons to minimise collateral damage

Shouldn't that be the Mumbai these days?

First strike maybe. But, I'd like to think of this idea as a "First Reaction" system.
