Sadly, I think this documentary will become "the" defining version of the Vietnam war.

So sebfrench you think the traveling salesman/undertaker Ken Burns digging up bones is somehow noble.
THE VIETNAM WAR an INTIMATE HISTORY is nothing more than a contemptuous carpetbagger selling feel-good snake oil to the anti-war people. The one's that freely gave aid, comfort and support to an enemy that could not have succeed in their goals without them.Just ask the enemy.
I've long resigned myself to the fact that his kind,Ken Burns, would have the last word on the whole affair,"it don't mean nothing".
Watching a viet cong claim his humanity turns my stomach but in chapter eight"The history of the world",Burns digs up the bones of 14 men that I knew and love. I owe them.

You will have the last word , whatever I may add ,since you fought there when I just cleaned chopper windshields for a year ,without an enemy around me.

Was his "Civil war " that biased ,according to you ?

I didn't see that at all. If anything, it was very anti politician/ senior military leadership. I obviously was not alive during Vietnam and I've limited my studies to French involvement pre-1954 but so far in this documentary the average american soldier comes off as heroic and noble. Having idealistic and straight forward ideas-having a real problem carrying out the most egregious orders from the clueless higher ups. Also, coming across as respecting the enemy whereas the leadership does not.

The decisions of the government and senior military leadership on the other hand ......

From my pov , the average grunt comes in this documentary , as a patriot ,and not as a killing machine.
At least , this is how I see all of you who defended there ,the high esteem you put your country in.

The woman who cleaned our hooch was the wife of a Vietnamese Captain. She used to bring us fresh fruit, and invited some of us to her home for a meal on a couple of occasions. I figure they were either killed out right in 1975 or re-educated to the point of death or insanity. These are some of what bothers me............The Miss Saigons deserved better...........

Fortunately Jeff the one thing I've learned in my years following you guys and digesting every word you type like a hungry student is, there is no "definitive" with which to stake a claim- I don't seek one because I know enough now to realize that is unrealistic. I am the blessed one because I've had all of you and guys like Ken who made me so much smarter than most. I am so grateful to have had this experience and importance in my life you will never know what it's meant, but it's been important. I never had high expectations of what Burns would do with this but I have looked forward to it since I first heard of it. It's Burns, it's a low bar to begin with.

I do wonder sometimes about Miss Saigon too and how she is doing~ she was a smart one.

Yes. she was one of the few people who ever made me feel it was not for nothing................I usually am in a place that realizes there is no answer to that war.. but this documentary dredged up a lot of crap I had buried........

I find the whole 'nam experience distasteful. It was us doing us the wrong thing.

Listen to a few minutes of a corpsman, a christian though. Funny alert...

His CW series was just seriously incomplete. And what does that have to do with Vietnam?

it seems the reaction to the show is divided along age groups, and maybe that is a positive thing.
I believe it would be impossible to present a documentary on a topic as complicated and emotional for those who experienced it without pushing someone's buttons.
Hopefully it will spark interest in younger people, hopefully it will allow veterans to speak to them.
The American forces and their allies were in an impossible situation, political gamesmanship both in Vietnam and Washington DC.
The wounds those men suffered, both physical and emotionally are never going to heal for them. When we finally pulled out, they were expected to return to civilization and civilian life and just get on with life, turn the page, and while most managed to transitions on the surface, shows like this are sure to bring back the feeling of betrayal many experienced.
