Scavengers, A Sci-Fi RPG, Ep. 1: Battle Damage

A Galaxy in turmoil. Legend has it that once the Galaxy was united, and a great war shattered the unified systems into the ever-shifting patchwork quilt they are today. Of course there are legends of an ancient order of knights older than that, and everyone knows those are worthless myths. How things are is how they've been for all of living memory, and all of what amounts for history.

In this little 'corner', there are a number of different civilizations. At various times all are at war with one another, or allied. Sometimes there are even three and four cornered wars, which makes battles very very interesting.

This arrangement means that in the border systems between these 'states', there is plenty of wild space....space that is one part scrapyard from past battles and one part 'no man's land'. Typically the victor in a battle, or whoever has the closest fleet train if there's no victor, picks up the spoils. But scavengers operating in Wild Space have a shorter distance to go, and can get there soonest. It's almost become a formality for fleet trains to 'see off' the scavengers picking through the battle wreckage.

Sometimes the scavengers even recover, or locate, things that almost put truth to the legends, power sources of incredible output but limited duration, and weapons which are more powerful than anything that can be made, designs that baffle even the most brilliant of engineers. Things that people will kill to get their hands on, or die to keep their enemy from acquiring.

The various civilizations are:

Nihon’Ja: A small 3 system polity with only three inhabited planets (two in the home system of Nihon’Ja….the third system being a dead system with mining potential), they have long been ferocious defenders of their borders. There are legends of their expansion and fall from grace ages in the past, but the last century has been one of fighting to maintain their core systems. They rely on fast and heavily armed ships, striking blows in rapid succession in space combat. Their Fighter Corps, and their legendary Wraiths (special operations commandoes) are all rigidly from a warrior caste from which comes the various monarchs…..though they are a very weak monarchy that tends to rely on the personality of the Nihon’Kahn and the agreement of the Senshi class. Experts at the human body and medicine, their pilots and Wraiths are often enhanced with implants that allow them to do feats in full body armor that most commandos can only do unprotected.

Penumbran Dynasty: The 11 systems of this polity are ruled by a single extended family, with thirteen dynasts simultaneously the absolute rulers of their inhabited worlds and members of the ruling council. The Dynast of the Fleet and the Dynast of the Silver Hand (secret police) complete the fifteen-man council of equals that rules the polity. While not innately expansionist, the industrialized and protectionist Dynasty keeps a firm grip on designated raw resource zones both within and along its borders. While they have smaller craft, they rely on capital ships primarily of cruiser-class and larger. A carefully restricted race, they have industrial and technological aptitude that - along with their natural gifts at astrography - make their Fleet a force to be feared.

Konflets Crusade: The Konflets Crusade was born out of a small sect on a single space station two centuries ago. When a charismatic high priest rose to power, the Konfleti abruptly underwent a fundamental change to their beliefs and began actively proselytizing. Within a year 90% of the station were true believers - and the rest were conscripted into the military. By the time the Prophet died, the Konfleti had political control over their entire system and religious dominance over half a dozen others. His death was the final step in transmuting their faith, and the Konflets Crusade now regards it as their holy duty to convert system after system whether by the shadowy plots and charisma of their interrogator-priests or the blazing volleys of their warships. Now encompassing twenty seven systems, the Konfleti have five full Crusade Fleets fighting to purify the surrounding worlds; each a large body of poorly trained fanatics wrapped around a rock-hard core of elite veterans from the core worlds.

Skandian Republic:

A polity of over three dozen planets, moons, and dozens more space stations, the Skandians consider themselves the greatest spacefarers to ever take to the starlanes. A primarily commercial entity, their vessels crisscross both their worlds and to the others….well, whichever other ones they aren’t at war yet. They’re also an expansionist Republic, inducting new planets and moons into their government, either by commercial mergers pushing the locals to vote for membership, or by other means.

Their fleet is primarily a carrier fleet, with 15 Carrier Battle Groups and another 5 Assault Carrier Divisions. A CBG consists of 3-6 cruisers protecting a single carrier which can deploy as many as 100 fighters and other small craft. A Carrier Division is a formation of 3 Carriers only, but their complement of 300 fighters is utterly devastating, and Divisions typically form the core of fleets, with battle groups providing the support asset.

Consisting of a Prime Minister and a Parliament on the home world of Skandia, the military is one of long-term conscripts. 4 years of service to the Republic tends to make one moderately competent, and a cadre of longer service veterans stiffens the moderate troopers. On the ground they tend to use mass warfare with heavy weapons, their lack of ability there a direct result of their preference to do battle in space.

Situation:

You arrive at system BR549, a system with a large asteroid belt often used by your ilk as a hideout because aside from some miners there's nothing really out here. The size of the asteroid belt suggests that a planet never formed in this system.

The Konflets Crusade was encroaching on the Skandian Republic. A Crusader fleet got caught in the system by a powerful force of Assault Carrier Divisions, and in the chaotic terrain of the asteroid belt was all in the favor of the fighter-based Skandian force. Still, the carnage is vast, with cruisers and fighters all over the place. A Skandian fleet train is inevitably on the way, likely supported by a Carrier Battle Group due to the Konflets' Crusade having unsurpassed determination. Some of the ships lack power, others have destroyed engines or bridges.....but it's almost certain that both Crusaders and Skandians are aboard at least some of the better conditioned hulls.....and neither side likes scavengers.

649.1.3: BR549 (System Limits)

BR549 is a system nominally outside the Skandian Republic's borders. The seven mining platforms across the system were wholly owned by the Black Skies Mining Consortium however, with a controlling interest held by Skandian figures of state. That was the common explanation for the regular patrols by RSN vessels, and the corporation generally welcomed vessels and crews alike aboard their station. That meant that when the Fourth Konfleti Crusade Fleet turned toward Skand's borders, Admiral Levian received orders to muster a scratch fleet in defense of the system. Crusader forces reached the system first, and were in the process of assaulting the second station when Levian's fleet jumped in-system and drove them into the belt.

Three hours over, and it was all over bar the dying. The surviving Konfleti vessels fought their way out to a clear jump point and disappeared from view. Four minutes later Levian's Assault Carriers jumped after them, leaving the void from the edge of the system to Ebon Processing Plant II filled with broken and burning wreckage - some larger pieces still holding together with survivors awaiting the Skandian Fleet Train with a mixture of hope and dread.

Nine minutes later, a collection of intrepid scavengers complete emergence at the edge of the debris zone; from the same general direction, but mindful of the tacit truce that covers men and women of their kind.

Kuroitori

Deep space bleeds from grey into star-speckled black as the Kuroitori completes its jump from out-system into BR549. The 18-metre craft is painted in charcoal and black, and without running lights is close to invisible to the naked eye. On the bridge a short oriental woman dances her hands across the controls and winds down the drive from the jump before throwing a glance to the hulking figure in the co-pilot's seat.

"It is as you said; the warships have gone, but there is no end of debris here. Some of it is still powered, and I can pick up some comm signals from here if you're minded to rescue folk for ransom."

She paused to study a display, then look back.

"If you would prefer, I believe I have enough data on the ship classes to determine which wreckage belongs to which vessel in most cases. So; what would you?"

Commander Pruitt has set his course to reach some of the bigger pieces in the debris field. The ship is a Starmaster Light Transport, modified for salvage work. There is a Plasma Cutting Torch in a hard point and a mechanical arm that can feed debris into the rear cargo door. The Cargo Hold has been shortened by ten feet next to the Crew Quarters. I figure we can still fit almost 120 tons worth of salvage.

We will try to rescue survivors who will be dropped off back at a Space Station, but we really want high value salvage. Weapons, Engines, Computer Banks and any Fuel Cells are highly desirable. We don't have a lot of room for survivors, but we will do what we can. We have a three man crew and have state rooms for three more passengers. Refugees will have to make do in cramped conditions. If we do not find any high value salvage in our first pass, we can fit more Refugees in the Cargo Hold. The Valet Robot will set up a medical station for any casualties

Commander Pruitt will pass on Piloting duties to the crew while he goes back into the Hold in full Vacuum Suit. He has to attach any cargo coming into the Hold to the tractor system. GMan88 will help Pilot and handle any negotiations with Skandian Officials. We expect compensation for rescuing survivors

Starmaster Light Transport Unnamed

With [OOC: GMan's character] at the helm, the [OOC: as-yet-unnamed] Starmaster slid in among the drifting debris. The comm waves were alive with signals across the frequencies - imprecations, threats and cries for help alike. Looking for Skandian survivors preferentially, they found one man in a powerless fighter and another in a detached section of a weapons station. Both refused rescue however, preferring to wait for the Skandian train due "soon". From your own experiences, you know "soon" could be anywhere from 2 - 18 hours. Still, short of forcibly abducting them there is nothing to be done without something creative.

On a brighter note, they locate a Crusade Lieutenant in a detached hydroponics dome whose atmosphere is rapidly becoming toxic. He accepts the crew's invitation and comes aboard in an emergency vac suit into one of your state rooms. Not far from the dome, they locate a large chunk, fully a third of a Konfleti cruiser. Through a ragged breach in the hull, they pick up signals that point to an active computer/sensor bank - though the erratic energy readings suggest it is discharging.

Commander Pruitt gets on the Comm System and directs the crew to approach the Konfleti Cruiser section. We will try and detach the computers and sensors and place them in the Cargo Hold. GMan88 will contact the Space Station to see if they want the section and what they will pay. We will accept barter trade for fuel, edibles and see if they have any ship weapons to offer. We won't mention we have the Crusader Lieutenant. We will also offer to pick up the survivors we saw, for a fee.

So far this looks like a good haul.

"Identify which wreckage goes with which ship for now and we'll go from there. Keep an eye open for weapons, energy sources, and computer/sensor banks. We don't have very much room for passengers aboard, so I'll skip on the rescuing unless the survivor is high ranking."

Starmaster: Commander Pruitt can't see the computer/sensor bank, but using his sensors you have a reasonable notion of where it is through the bulkhead. He could try cutting it out directly using a plasma torch, or sending someone into the depressurized area through the breach that's open to space. The comm station is open for the communications officer to hail the station, when ready.

Kuroitori: "Very well. I will begin models using the sensors."

Ren begins bringing up a sensor map of the area, designating some collections of contacts in individual shades of blues and greens to note a relation. The more contacts she is able to identify, the clearer the picture becomes until the wreckage of two Skandian fighters, a mostly-intact Skandian Assault Carrier, a pair of Konfleti destroyers and half a Konfleti cruiser can be identified in the region. There is another contact moving near the cruiser, likely another scavenger vessel as it's too large for an escape pod.

Floating freely in space, Mugen is able to locate most of the components of a broadside railcannon which Ren notes will need to be hauled in manually. She is ready to navigate the vessel in close when Mugen is ready with a grappling tool (available aboard ship) in the cargo lock. She also detects active energy signals from the Assault Carrier, although they're muted by the thick hull plating at this range.

Commander Pruitt will use the Vacuum Suit and Mechanical Arm as a means to get into the Konfleti wreck. We will assess the situation there when we have more information. It is looking like a cutting torch job, though.

GMan, while I am in the wreck, use sensors to map out the area so we know who and what is in the area.

Ren begins bringing up a sensor map of the area, designating some collections of contacts in individual shades of blues and greens to note a relation. She is ready to navigate the vessel in close when Mugen is ready with a grappling tool (available aboard ship) in the cargo lock. She also detects active energy signals from the Assault Carrier, although they're muted by the thick hull plating at this range.
Mugen is extremely interested by the mostly intact Assault Carrier and is astonished when he is informed that active energy signals are being detected. Despite this, he realizes he should take the easy prey first and works to get the grappling tool ready inside the cargo lock as Ren navigates in close signaling to Ren over his cybernetics to take a closer look at the intact Assault Carrier.

Depressurizing the long cargo bay, Commander Pruitt makes his way carefully down the decking, the light charge of his magnetic boots keeping him in contact with the floor (so long as he doesn't make any grand gestures). Opening the boarding ramp to space, he finds himself oriented towards the breach in the cruiser and takes a firm grip on the mechanical arm which extends to deposit him on the Konfleti vessel. There are only the tiniest traces of atmosphere remaining here and the flames that scorched the interior are gone from view. Thankfully he feels the heat from the decking before any permanent damage is done to his boots, and manages to maneuver down the hall to the sensor station without further incident.

Prying open the hatch, he finds the depressurized remains of a Konfleti crewman, his helmet still hanging from the door. That doesn't appear to be how he died though, and his body still twitches from visible discharges from the large bank of computers that power this sensor station. Pruitt judges that he could probably pry out the undamaged parts once in the chamber, using the tools at his belt. The whole powered computer bank would likely not fit through the hatch however, and would need to be extracted directly through the hull - a cutting torch job.

Kuroitori
Mugen deftly retrieves two four-metre sections of the barrel as well as the key initiator components that make the railcannon a dangerous broadside weapon. As it is the components are useless, but a day or two in a wildspace repair station and some unmarked vessel will be sporting a sawn-off railcannon of its very own. It would have to be a vessel with a fair bit of power mind you, but wildspacers rarely get access to the fleet-grade weapons of the polities.

The sleek black craft swoops in towards the hull of the Assault Carrier, triggering some wild fire from point defense stations that appear to still have power and a defensive mindset. It looks as though the ship has taken a heavy pounding along its length, but the reinforced plating has kept the capital ship largely intact save for a single deep penetration at its midline. There are a number of burnt-through passageways there that Mugen could likely enter from, and another point where a portside hangar bay has been opened to space. Finally, there is a well-lit hatch approximately midway up the starboard side of the vessel, although there are a number of visible figures approaching that even now. A work party of some kind?
