One thing not mentioned is that with the exception of the vast nothingness of the middle eastern deserts, most combat will likely occur in areas where local building codes mean that roads and bridges are simply inadequate for any MBT, be it Leo 2, Abrams, or Chally 2. It's yet one reason why older tanks like the T55 are still viable in the 3rd world, better tanks are available and at workable prices, but a T55 is light enough to get across crap bridges.

Honestly, for an offensive war of any scale besides national mobilization, the measure of strength for a power is more likely to be their light armor assets that have the ability to operate across the enemy country, and also be quickly deployed in force. And IIRC, Bradleys accounted for as many Iraqi tanks in the Gulf War as Abrams did, so they're not exactly slouches.

In short, it doesn't bother me that tank battalions are being reduced. The MBT of the Cold War is returning to its old station as being the Heavy Tank for breakthrough operations, standing ground, and so on. The IFV or light tank is being utilized more and more like the medium of WW2, handling the bulk of the lifting. I would say that the more concerning bit is that while MBT battalions are going down, there isn't a noticeable realignment towards the new way of warfare....just a reduction in the old way.

The problem is many mechanized battalions are trading in Bradleys for STRYKERS or LAV's. There is also a line of thought to remove the gun turret from Bradleys to be able to seat a couple more passengers. A lot of the old Heavy Battalions in the National Guard have been converted to Light Infantry or just plain deleted.

This is one Bde of the 10th PZ. The Bde is stationed in the far south in the foot hills of the Alps. The Div Hqs is just out side of Wurzburg and at one time was part of the VII US Corps.

Might be because most of the French troops in Iraq were not "French" - they were the Foreign Legion, which France uses to fight all wars outside of France...and the Legion lives for that.

Contrary to popular belief, the French Foreign Legion is not a separate formation. Its units are integrated into regular French Army formations. There are also French "Marine" regiments which also get overseas deployments. They are not "Marine" in the USMC/RM sense, but legally able to be deployed overseas. Even in the FFL, many of the members are French.

They weren't legion, not even combat troops, more like logistics and Air Force base personnel.

Key words bold....of the 5 major French units in Afghanistan, only one was Legion...the rest were metropolitan and/or elite brigades. A unit of special forces (non-Legion) was also present.

Oh, Snap. I got the solution for the military aged illegal immigrants. Send them off to some distant land to fight there... They can join the FFL and all is good.

To paraphrase what went on--someone stated that other European countries were afraid if the German military got bigger than it is today. My response was that I doubted it because the German military was much larger during the West German/Cold War years and it never seemed to bother the rest of Western Europe when it was protecting them.
But the Americans were in and it was to keep soviets out

In Americans opt out( as was the intial fear under trump) plus russians and germans are on better terms then the old fears of countries surrounding germany may resurface again
