UK to Recieve Its First P-8 Aircraft in 2019

Quote:
Boeing has secured a $2.2 billion contract covering 17 P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft destined for the US Navy, plus export customers Australia and the UK.

Of the 17 aircraft, 11 will go to the US Navy, four to the Royal Australian Air Force, and two to the UK Royal Air Force. This pair will be the first examples from a nine-jet order, and will be delivered in 2019.

Flight Fleets Analyzer shows there are 68 of the type in current service. The USN is lead operator, with 58 examples operational, while Australia has received its first two P-8As and the Indian navy eight P-8Is.

Separately, Norway's defence ministry in late March announced that it has signed a contract with the USA for five P-8As.

And, interestingly, Mk 54s, which suggests that BAE may have to downsize its remaining torpedo business in the not-so-distant.

Don't worry, old chap, the would-be People's Republic of Scotland can probably afford one low-cost MPA

Australia received the first P-8 back in Nov' the next plane was due in March. Is the UK version going to be fitted out to carry Harpoon?

They are theoretically OSD by 2020 and a supposed replacement will arrive with the Type 26, but it has yet to be confirmed. Possible interim of new Harpoons pending somewhat else (which could be version of FASGW or a SPEAR mod or summut).

The issue will be cost of integration, which does suggest a Harpoon interim.

The capability gap in anti-submarine warfare and aircraft carrier capability has been an embarrassment. Both will shortly be rectified but these have been tough years for the RAF and RN given some of the incidents endured. We are lucky it came at a time of relatively benign Russian geopolitical relations and indeed that was probably the gamble.

Not it has not, except if you write for the Daily Fail. Requirement for ASW or carrier strike has been fairly low given the threat type and availability of land bases.

Russian relations are not benign, but their naval forces remain fairly feeble (thought the splenetic elements of the UK media might pretend otherwise) so the calculated drop in ASW / CV capability will work out fine and the absence of ASW will turn out to have been covered.

Perfect? No. The way things happen? Yes

That reads an awful lot like a press release, ironically enough given your lead on media spin.

Actually, I do think you are well informed and enjoy reading your posts, especially on this Air section. I am [somewhat] well informed too though and disagree on this particular capability assessment.

I wonder if NATO has ever given thought to establishing a joint maritime patrol wing for ASW and maritime interdiction?
