Rick Atkinson's Trilogy of WW2 European Campaign

Regarding WW2, I've been more interested in WW2 in the Pacific, due to my Dad's involvement as a Helldiver, from the USS Bunker Hill, and 4 USMC Uncle's , but an old college pal mentioned this series by Rick Atkinson, a brilliant writer, ( I loved his book on the 1st Gulf War, " Crusade"), and am now enjoying the 1st book, " An Army At Dawn", about the African Campaign. If anyone read the series, can you offer you're feelings on it. The British Army was more seasoned, and better prepared, and we were learning, as leaders,( Patton, Ike, etc.), the politics, logistics, terrain, all came into play, and fascinating reading. Thanks

My Father was a teenager in WWII and I gave him this book. He was really surprized that the Army was so "behind". I liked the whole series. It was an eye opener for me.

Pruitt, I replied to you're post about losing you're Uncle, ( God Bless His Soul), in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal,. Seems like all armies have to get their feet wet, to understand how to fight, it happened in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Korea, Vietnam & even today. That's why guys like Chesty Puller in WW2 ( Banana Republic Wars), Jackson, Lee, ( Mexican American War) for Civil War, Ray Davis USMC Capt. in Peleliu, ( Korean War Chosin Hero),. Washington( Indian Wars) for Revolution,. all had some understand and experience in battle to relate to the others of how to respond. In the FDNY, we learned, in early 80's., keep your mouth shut, and listen to senior man, at least for 1st year, and learn what it's really like. I learned from the best, the War year guys of 60's, 70's in FDNY, and loved every minute till our job changed that day, ( 9/11), and never the same.

Uncle Richard was in the engine room when the torpedo hit. It was quick when all the superheated steam was released. He was the only "Oden Boy" to enlist in the Navy. Most went into the Army.

Uncle Richard never married and was working in Westlake Louisiana when he enlisted. Lots of thirty year olds went into the Navy. My Granddad got him and several other Oden Boys jobs in the area. It seems being the Sheriff of Allen Parish did not have any job creation magic for my Great Grandfather Oden. Out of eight Oden children only three had children. When Uncle Ralph died a year or so back there was only one Nephew left. Uncle Ralph was running an Army hospital nearby when he met my Aunt. He was over 100 when he passed.

Is the third book in the series - "Guns at last Light" - out of print?

Unavailable for months now via Amazon. Very strange.

I read the entire trilogy through my public library.

Is that something else rural Kansas has access to that Germany doesn't?

Have someone you know in the US buy the paperback version and send it to you. Have you tried ordering it through Amazon UK? I have ordered on Amazon before and the store shipped from the UK.

Green Tiger, I have one hardback (Guns At Last Light) and the other two "mass market" copies. $30.00U$ and shipping from Missouri and they're yours. I'm good with sending them without any advance payment, I've always been one to be the first to trust.

I very much appreciate the suggestions and offers of help.

IŽll let it rest for a bit, as I found under a mountain of unreads volume two "Day of Battle". (Red face!)

IŽll get that under my belt, and then seriously chase volume 3.

But thanks again!
