Back From The Dead? Reported Sightings Fuel Hope For Return Of Tasmanian Tigers

Quote:
It has been more than eight decades since the last known Tasmanian tiger died. In that time, the marsupial has become the stuff of textbook sketches and yellowing photographs, little more than a memory aging into oblivion.

But Thylacinus cynocephalus may still be out there.

Recent "plausible sightings" have challenged the accepted wisdom that the animal has gone extinct and have inspired researchers at Australia's James Cook University to commence a quest to find it themselves.
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...smanian-tigers

Let's hope they find them - and kill them with fire! We don't need THIS coming back from the dead!

I doubt they will find anything, and by that I mean any kind of evidence... bones, tracks etc. These tigers were rarely seen at the beginning of the twentieth century, and that was only in Tasmania. They were becoming rare even before British settlement on the mainland, possibly already extinct.

Plausible sightings mean nothing if no evidence has ever cropped up... and this has been happening for decades now, tourist operators are the main culprits for stirring up stories, which in turn gives them free press coverage because media outlets know such stories generate interest.

That sounds just like our "Sasquatch" or "Big Foot". It's always someone with an interest that sees it and it's normally in areas too populated for them to remain unseen for that long.

With the caveat that the tiger actually existed at one point.

Sadly the Tiger is most likely extinct.

The Aborigines brought the dingo which drove it to the extinction on the Mainland and Europeans and disease finished the job by killing them in Tasmania.

However, if they still do exist, I would suggest looking on the mainland, especially in the Gippsland region of Victoria.

Most likely whatever is killing stock there is feral dogs and really huge feral cats ... most likely. A thylacine makes a lot more sense than ABCs (Alien Big Cats - aka cougars et al)

I grew up in the Gippsland region, and I still reside there... I can tell you now there is no evidence of such creatures still roaming around.

Honestly, I wanted to provide the article just so I could provide that picture again. I find that image truly terrifying.

They made a movie on this subject. IIRC Willam Defoe starred.

Yep. Filmed partly in and around Hobart (with the Grand Chancellor Hotel on the waterfront standing in for a Paris hotel lobby!).

A work colleague had a small part as an extra.

Local radio has done more than one April Fool's prank by announcing the discovery/capture of a live Tiger. Good stuff.

Be it Tassie Tiger, Tassie Devil or lodestar - Tasmanian icons have a mystique all their own.

The scary thing now are wild dogs, some can grow quite large, some have been reported to be up to 40 kgs in Qlds. The worst part is, there is no successful method to keep them under control.

I'm also from Gippsland and have spent a lot of time in the bush between the Latrobe Valley and Walhalla. And I've seen absolutely nothing.

I agree there is no real evidence, hence why I believe they are extinct.

However there are plenty of sightings, dubious footprints and apparently unusual animal kills which convince many people.

These range from the supposed tiger shot and buried near the Wilson's Prom lighthouse, to sightings between Sale and the coast.

The region between Moe and Melbourne seems to be a noted hotspot.

Sadly the safe bet is on the Thylacine being extinct. However if there is something strange (that isn't a feral cat or dog) roaming the bush of Southern Victoria then it is more likely to be a Tiger than one of the Big Cat species.

Back in the 1950s there was the Wonthaggi monster, a friend of mine claims to have seen a large creature one night... but he immediately assumed it was a black puma, so the details of his experience has been skewed.
