Venezuela plunged into turmoil as top court muzzles congress

Quote:
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) Venezuelans have been thrust into a new round of political turbulence after the government-stacked Supreme Court gutted congress of its last vestiges of power, drawing widespread condemnation from foreign governments and sparking calls for protests.

Governments across Latin America on Thursday condemned the power grab, with the head of the Organization of American States likening it to a "self-inflicted coup" by socialist President Nicolas Maduro's "regime" against the opposition-controlled congress.

In a surprise decision, the magistrates ruled late Wednesday that as long as lawmakers remain in contempt of past rulings, the high court, or an institution it designates, can assume the constitutionally assigned powers of the National Assembly, which has been controlled by the opposition for nearly a year and a half.

The ruling and one earlier in the week limiting lawmakers' immunity from prosecution capped a feud that began when the long-marginalized opposition won control of the legislature by a landslide in December 2015 and then mounted a campaign to force Maduro from office. The leftist leader, who has seen his approval ratings plunge amid widespread food shortages and triple-digit inflation, responded by relying on the Supreme Court to unseat several lawmakers and then routinely nullify all legislation voted there.

Should we start a countdown?

I've been wondering how much the people there would take before a coup would develop. Not being able to feed your kids or family would tend to set people off...

But when you control the military, it helps extend your longevity. And one can't forget that the government still has a number of supporters, especially amongst the poorest and rural communities.

Both the left and the right do... when you get out far enough. Remember that Venezuela spent the last eight years demonizing Obama and the "left" for their supposed "far-right" support/tactics regarding the great and glorious Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela!

It's not a question of being right or left, but of how far. Even if you wanted to play that card, remember that history has been dominated by very conservative dictatorships. Heck, Europe didn't get rid of them till a century ago.

Venezuela's top prosecutor rebukes Supreme Court power grab

Quote:
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) Venezuela's chief prosecutor broke with the government Friday and rebuked a Supreme Court decision stripping congress of its last vestiges of power, showing a crack in the embattled administration of socialist President Nicolas Maduro amid a torrent of international condemnation over what many decried as a major step toward dictatorship.

In a shocking pronouncement, long-time government loyalist Luisa Ortega Diaz said it was her "unavoidable historical duty" as the nation's top judicial authority to denounce what she called a "rupture" of the constitutional order in the court ruling against the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

"We call for reflection so that the democratic path can be retaken," she said to the loud applause of aides gathered around her.

The statement gave a major boost to the opposition, some of whom spent the day sparring with riot police and gearing up for what they hope will be nationwide protests Saturday.
