I think this is a good place to have a discussion as well as post beautiful art, but how do you guys feel about the socialist/soviet realism in terms of the constraints on art during the Soviet era?

I'm a major fan of realism in art - gimme a 16th century Dutch master over a 20th century impressionist - but I'm noticing that there's... well, I want to say lack of variety in the Soviet art during the 20s-60s, but that could be taken out of context. There are quite a lot of styles and individual character in the artwork.

So I can appreciate the output, but what are the best examples of Soviet art during the more restrictive era that didn't conform to Socialist/Soviet realism? The picture above seems like what I'd expect from a less-than Soviet realism approach.

It won't be anything new if I say that socrealism produce tons of mediocre and talentless stuff. It also won't be new saying that a heyday of Soviet modernist arts was the first post-revolutionary years before the period of strict censorship started.

Socialist Realism was presented in the West though the same immensely distorted lens as the Soviet Union as a whole: just like the country was a veritable hell on Earth from 1917 to 1991 without the slightest bright spot, then its art style was equally crap as well. Of course, ideology played a part in it, but let's say the works of Englightenment artists like Greuze were no less ideologically charged, presented the world in a "moral and instructive" way instead of attempting to reflect reality. If one abstracts oneself from the fact some of the paintings were painted in the USSR, many of them could hang on the same wall next to Rockwell's paintings and few people would even bat an eylid. As for the diversity, then of course, Soviet art was stylistically rather uniform, but starting from the 60's, despite Khrustchev's pressure, other styles started appearing informally and half-formally, and one shouldn't forget that even within Socialist Realism (which doesn't really have any precise definition or it got blurred with time) there was a certain scope of artistic liberty and not every single painting had to be a slightly modified copy of Stalin's portait or Lenin at the 2nd Congress of Soviets.

Interesting art, pretty much like official German art during the same period - heroic figures, desperate heroism and the savagery of the enemy.

What is surprising is that the Soviets could spare the time, food and energy to produce art like this during the vicious Second World War.

Vyacheslav Pakulin painting a view of the Nevsky prospekt in January 1942 when the mortality rate in the city was still about 3-4 thousand people per day, with the temperature below 20-25 Celsius. True artists don't "spare" anything to continue their work - they create art no matter what as this is their higher calling.
