Massena's Trump Files

Good for Congressman Pete Sessions. Spicer and the whole White House crowd need to shut up.

The issue has nothing to do with the US Constitution or the freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

It is not a freedom of speech issue, but one of minding their own bailiwick and doing their job. Spicer does neither and Sessions was correct in telling him to mind his own business and to stay out of the business of the Congress.

Spicer has nothing to do with Congress; he is a spokesman for the president, nothing more and nothing less. He does not have a mandate to deal with Congress. That's the president's job.

You know, you don't have to answer every thread and rate them 1 star. Try letting a few go.

He can't help it. It's a knee-jerk reaction to defend his idol and the minions that go with it, no matter what they do.

It is ideology, pure and simple, as well as party loyalty, both of which he blindly follows.

And that is despicable.

Absolutely Incredible...

This was reported by the Washington Post regarding the current debate on national health care:

Even with general health insurance as we have here - the same effect still applies.

People in lower income brackets are the last to take their children to visit a dentist, stop smoking, systematically exercise etc.

Generally psychological effects are thought to be the cause - if your life sucks anyway, living long and healthy is likely not as attractive

Conversely - they are more likely to be religious and buy lottery tickets, go figure that.

Maybe "being poor" could be a condition that is not itself natural and unavoidable?

Not natural? Our caveman ancestors knew nothing but poverty: they lived from meal to meal, following the herds, praying for water -- but never too much. They were constantly subject to the vagaries of drought, flood, winds, snows, harsh sun, heat, cold, inky night, hunger, pestering insects, disease, etc, etc, etc. Before the establishment of political units, what was wealth: a second animal skin? Poverty and suffering are about as natural as it gets. It's wealth and security and living into old age that are the unnatural conditions.

In today's world, in today's developed economies, where wealth abounds, being poor is either the result of extremely bad luck, exceptional ignorance and inability, or a volitional choice. If a person makes the universally acknowledged bad choice to not seek medical treatment for a suspected condition, then does it not stand to reason that said person has also made mind-bendingly bad choices in education, career, marriage, etc, etc?

Back in the day people made poor choices because the proper information hadn't been discovered and/or formulated, or the means for disseminating that information hadn't yet been developed. In our societies that is decidedly not the case. The internet provides virtually the sum total of all human knowledge -- available at your fingertips. Even some of the poorest peasants in India are not only getting wired in, they're making real use of the information so gained. Meanwhile, in the West, far and away the most popular uses of the internet are social media, gambling, pornography, and cat videos. With nothing more than access to the internet, one can develop a fairly sound working knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, mathematics, statistics, history, philosophy, theology, politics, law, literature, etc, etc, etc. The internet cannot alone cultivate expertise, but it can disseminate useful knowledge further and wider than has ever been imagined. But my neighbors want dog stunts and and the spreads on Sunday's games. Who do you blame for that?

Um, to a good degree, I agree with the Congressman. The poor (as a general rule) aren't that way because they're just down on their luck or something like that. They're poor, generally, because they're lazy and stupid... At least in America they are.

They're more likely to smoke (an expensive habit given the massive taxes government slaps on tobacco). They generally have poor eating habits as they have less knowledge of how to cook or plan meals. Does anyone really think somebody who dropped out of high school has the mental wherewithal to plan menus, do comparative shopping, or take advantage of sales, coupons, and the like? They just buy stuff they like with their food stamps instead. After all, McDonald's takes them!

It can be small things they do that hurt them economically. They'll tend to leave lights on, run the A/C at 70 degrees because that's comfortable for them. They don't consider the consequences of their actions.

As Slick points out "...being poor is either the result of extremely bad luck, exceptional ignorance and inability, or a volitional choice."

Usually it's a combination of dumb and lazy. That is, the poor are dumb and they choose to be lazy rather than do anything to genuinely improve their situation even though opportunities for doing so are all around them.

With health care, they're not going to think about it until there's some major health emergency in their life to deal with. Then they expect others to just take care of them. Personal responsibility is not high on their list of things to practice.

It is unavoidable, but you have to bust ass. Many would rather hang out on the street and have big government take care of them.

By definition, being at the end of the bell curve for low income and low wealth is "poor". Other end of the bell curve being "wealthy". Many "poor" in the USA still live better than the middle-class of a century ago. Some things are relative.
