If we want to make space cool again and make it have a impact on human life, not only in the US but also the rest of the world, lets put our dork of a president on a rocket, who the hell cares if it can land or orbit, and fire him off to a new galaxy. Bobo can be his first mate. Trump's tweets and statements are out of this world already. Lets send him off to meet up with them! I'll even throw in two light sabers from Toys R Us for the two gomers so they can have a battle over whether or not Bobo wiretapped Trump Towers. Maybe North Korea has a spare rocket.

It will require heavy lift vehicles, like the Ares V, or a space elevator to begin the process of economically exploiting our Solar System.
SpaceX dose have 2 heavy lift programs, the Falcon Heavy is scheduled to fly this year (delayed from last year due to SpaceXs issues with Helium COPVs) with a expected lift capability of 54 tonnes to LEO.

And then theres their ambitious ITS with a projected capability of 300+ tonnes to LEO, though it's not expected to be ready before 2020 (possibly before 2025 but who knows).

Blue origin also has equivalent to the Falcon heavy (45 tonne payload to LEO) but their not as far along as SpaceX is with no immediate launch schedules (expected before 2020 though).

NASAs SLS is scheduled for next year, with a possible maned mission (the space shuttles first flight was also manned), is expected to have a lift capacity of at lest 70 tonnes, to a possible 130 tonnes in later variants.

The Saturn V could lift 140 tonnes to LEO.

Quote:
Since the private sector has now demonstrated the capability to deliver small payloads into orbit, NASA should focus on establishing permanent infrastructure in Earth orbit, on the Moon and manned travel to Mars and beyond. If we are going to have a National Astronautics and Space Administration, it should be spending its entire budget on astronautics (space operations). NASA lacks the means to conduct its primary mission because it spends an ever increasing share of its budget on Earth, environmental, marine and other ancillary science projects.

The science should be left to academia, NOAA, USGS, other government science agencies and the private sector.

Over recent years, NASA has spent about 30% of its budget on things not related to astronautics.

Apollo 17 astronaut Jack Schmitt has some good ideas about restructuring NASA... Scrap it and replace it with an agency dedicated to space operations.

NASA should only be doing those things that the private sector, other government agencies and academia can't do.
I would agree that NASA should be focusing by in large on space hardware and not weather or environmental sciences or what nought.

It's all about advertising.

The Science community is BAD at waving their own flag. Partly because it's hard to apply funding to advertising when your job is to "do" science, not "promote" science. Partly due to scientists generally being self absorbed in what they are doing, and not considering the future of science by recruiting young scientists to fill the gaps.

From my experience, in the USA most scientists are actually from other countries. Every DOE/NSF lab I have worked at was run by scientists from Germany, Russia, France, Japan, China, etc. Only when you get down into the worker bees do you start getting a significant number of USA scientists. Partly because all the top positions require Ph.D.s because they give them away for free in Europe thanks to their socialist governments. Also, because a lot of top US scientists work for industry and the military, not basic research.

About 1 in 10 of my fellow employees are Women. They are quite capable, but their numbers show a serious gender disparity in science. It's a little better in Europe, and Asia, but not much.

Space science has come a long way in my lifetime and I follow the subject closely. Unfortunately, I personally do little to pass that enthusiasm on to younger generations due to a general lack of contact (I'm not a teacher, I'm a "doer") with kids.

We should all wear T-shirts.

The problem is access.

The odds of individual actually getting into space are incredibly slender, worse than the odds of playing pro sports.

The early days of aviation, the early days of radio, the early days of the Net all provided the opportunity for individuals to get involved.

But space demands incredibly high academic standards for even the hope of getting into orbit.

You can't sell it to the masses unless the masses can participate.

Space X and other private ventures have revitalised our interest, but nothing can replace NASA, especially for the missions to explore the other planets, and other objects on our solar system. Sure it's cool to see a first stage return back to earth and land, but the science NASA has given us from reaching out to our solar system is priceless.

The unmanned NASA missions have been a goldmine for science and finding new discoveries, we have been blessed with some real innovations and serious investment in exploring other worlds in our own lifetime. It's been a exciting time to appreciate space and all its' wonders.
Here is a list of what NASA has given us... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unmann...ory_.282011.29.

It is early days yet in space exploration. If it follows the pattern of european world exploration, columbus is still at the royal court pleading for funding.250 years to an independent mars and shisters arguing about who has the property writes to mine Neptune.Imho.

Its priceless to you, because you're not paying for it.

If the DNC keeps using NASA as a political football and it will not survive.
