IDF F-35s over Syria

Take it with a pinch of salt, but interesting nevertheless.

I have been informed that the US considers a lot of the theater an LO-only zone, hence the F-22 / B-2 usage. There was also a rumor that F-117s had been deployed to the region, though goodness only knows what that would have accomplished.

The Air Force retired the F-117 several years ago. They are supposed to be replaced by the F-35.

Indeed, yet there is a busy squadron over at Tonopah. The guy who told me was at RF 17 and he was pretty leery about it, but apparently it was the gossip doing the rounds

Its been nearly a decade since they stood down. I seriously doubt any could be brought back to service without an very expensive overhaul.

The F-22 was their intended replacement at the time they were pulled.

They're probably being escorted by the TIE fighters that aren't there either.

Like I said, gossip doing the rounds at a USAF exercise; make of it what you will. They still fly F-117s fairly regularly over Nevada, so there are certainly airworthy examples.

Unlike most other Air Force aircraft that are retired to Davis-Monthan AFB for scrapping, or dispersal to museums, most of the F-117s were placed in "Type 1000" storage in their original hangars at the Tonopah Test Range Airport. At Tonopah, their wings were removed and the aircraft are stored in their original climate-controlled hangars. The decommissioning occurred in eight phases, with the operational aircraft retired to Tonopah in seven waves beginning on 13 March 2007, and ending with the last wave's arrival on 22 April 2008. Four aircraft were kept flying beyond April by the 410th Flight Test Squadron at Palmdale for flight test. By August, two were remaining. The last F-117 (AF Serial No. 86-0831) left Palmdale to fly to Tonopah on 11 August 2008. With the last aircraft retired, the 410th was inactivated in a ceremony on 1 August 2008.
In 2016 the aircraft were removed from the 2007 NDA list, and are now eligible for scrapping or cannibalizing.

I hope you weren't buying the drinks for that gossip.

Are now eligible, as of last year; an aircraft that nominally went out of service a decade ago. Note - and this is important in constructing logical arguments - that terms such as eligible does not necessarily mean enacted

Nope. It came from someone who is invited to Red Flag most times. I do not, personally, believe it and I put it here merely for interest's sake. However, I do trust him more than I would trust the opinion of a failed chicken soup machine cleaner, Mr Rimmer

The Great One never failed in soup dispenser maintenance.

It was the botched repair to the radiation shielding units that killed everyone.

No: the USAF has leave to remove from inventory - that is not necessarily the same thing.

Do try to keep up.

Not so fast sir.

The F-117 still presents an excellent low signature test bed which can be used to test other weapons systems. The cost of maintaining a small number of these aircraft would be little noticed and some of the classified budgets of various programs who need such an asset.
