Looking for a good WW1 and WW2 sim

I got started in PC games playing Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and Red Baron.

I would like to get a decent flight sim set in each war (two games). Not interested in arcade stuff.

Any recommendations?

I have played a lot of Flight simulators. Had to give it up due to worsening eyesight but I suspect that for reality the DCS mustang is still the best simulator but not much of a game. Even after all these years I would go with IL2 and Rise of Flight. If you want to play online then Battle of Moscow may be your best bet. If you want someone to play with let me know and I will see if my old buddies are still playing.

IL2 is dated beyond what most people can tolerate but I like it because you can have thousands of active objects. There is also an online war game module call Scorched Earth Online War that people are still using that adds the element of a strategy game to IL2.

For WWI I recommend Over the Flanders Fields. Amazing career and campaign mode and comes with like 100 aircraft included in the purchase. You don't have to purchase individual aircraft.

For WWII War Thunder and the Original IL-2 Sturmovik, the one released 17 years ago.

There is a new Sturmovik game, I have it, graphics look great, but the product is unfinished and hasn't reached its full potential yet.

War Thunder comes in the simulator version and the arcade version. Everybody plays the arcade version because it's so easy to fly. It's not a serious simulator, but it's incredibly enjoyable. In War Thunder you will fly primarily against people. There are single player campaigns and missions but once you start flying against real people you will not want to fly against the computer.

Thanks for the input. I don 't have the Net speed to play online, but that is OK because I'm a lousy pilot.

That it is....WIP...offers a good balance of combat, logistics, and even production.

It also has a good scenario editor as well.

Also the Silent Hunter series of submarine simulators are excellent as well....

We have a lot more flight sims that are released as "work in progress" with new modules and features added in the future.

This is because according to programmers flight sims have become so complex they are like 100x harder to make than 20 or 30 years ago. The audience is more demanding than ever.

BTW, Digital Combat Simulator World is also producing WWII modules and maps and aircraft. They already have several WWII aircraft on the market (plus two dozen jets) and a new Normandy map.

The simulator makes it easy to create scripted campaigns so once you have the maps and the aircraft lots of new interesting scripted campaigns follow shortly thereafter.

The level of detail is spectacular. For instance, the instruments are no longer sprites but full 3D model so the hand, the glass, the bezel, etc. are separate pieces. The models are high fidelity i.e. most aircraft controls and buttons and features work just like the real aircraft.

Get a Saitek HOTAS joystick-throttle combo. Amazing product and you won't break the bank. The Saitek HOTAS is incredible; it comes with LCD displays and lights that glow in the dark and god knows what else.

For a simpler joystick you can get a used Microsoft Force Feedback that still works great and it gives you the force feedback option.

I have a Saitek HOTAS X-55 that looks like this:

For older sims I also have a simpler Cyborg Fly. The problem is older games don't recognize HOTAS systems because they don't recognize the separate throttle. But they recognize the Cyborg because it comes with it's own integral baby throttle so the programming is simpler.

Saitek is the new world leader in joysticks and they lead in innovation. A lot of older joystick companies went out of business.
