Great news. Pity it didn't happen 60 years ago. Sadly Cuba is stuck in a totalitarian deep freeze with no obvious end in sight.

There are those who believe that by the time Che went to Bolivia that Castro actually wanted him out of the way. Che had become the loose cannon of the Cuban revolution, and his management of the economy was downright deplorable, even by communist standards. As a dead martyr, Che was infinitely more valuable to Castro then he ever was as a live government minister.

The New York Times: still displaying Walter Duranty's Pulitzer proudly in their lobby.

But I can give the devil his due: as a practitioner of realpolitik, Castro might well have been top of the heap, certainly better than any US president. As an orator as well, Castro was outstanding. I saw both Castro and Bill Clinton speak during the UN's 50th anniversary celebrations, and Castro can light up any room, while Bubba's droning can put meth addicts to sleep. Strangely, up close, within two or three feet, Castro came across as a small and fearful man: twitching, eyes darting, about 5'6" in height. Maybe he was just having a rough day, I don't know, but his vibe weirded me out.

I was not alive during the cold war so therefore I do not have the anti communism siege mentality. That said I recognized when Mr Castro spoke out against America, I never liked those anti American messages. But considering the USA has been at war with arguably its greatest ally the UK....shows us that one time foes can become allies. To think that Brits and Americans shot at each other and what Cubans and Americans are exchanging insults with each other...let us Cubans and Americans become friends. I'm glad Obama reached out to Raul Castro and considering the strong Christian population of Cuba...I am all for a positive relationship with Cuba. Tucker Carlson of Fox news had an interesting interview with a professor from the western new york area last night.

For all his guerrilla beard and fatigues, Castro was a desk jockey. He avoided personal violence of all sorts. Much like Che, he was all mouth and planning.

Criticize Edward Snowden right, but then at the same time you suggest Castro has political prisoners? The USA has guantanamo bay but what Cuba is the evil one? In no way shape or form am I criticizing the USA or even guantanamo bay....just pointing out facts. Instead of being so critical of Cuba....instead we need to both admit that the USA and Cuba are not perfect...Cuba with its attacks on political prisoners and America with its Jim Crow laws. Che was no coward: he stuck his neck out plenty on three continents. Che's failings were his single-mindedness: he had a habit of trying to impose his vision of socialism on everyone he encountered, often coming across as hysterical, so he typically wore out his welcome rather quickly; and moral: excessive violence was never a problem when it came to advancing the subjective interests of his revolution. In fact, the more violence the better in Che's view. After all, he did proclaim "soy un Stalinista!" He certainly wasn't kidding.

Perhaps Castro was a desk jockey, but he was the only communist leader to rise to national power without foreign assistance. Not even Lenin could make that claim. As a Machiavellian, Castro might have been the greatest of all time.

And with the body count he racked up amongst his fellow Cubans who simply wanted freedom.

He took an oppressed Third World nation and kept it backwards and oppressed.

During the 1990s, Castro hosted Pope JPII

After their private audience, it was time to bring out the gifts.

Castro gave the Pope a 120-year-old biography of 19th century priest Felix Varela - considered the father of Cuban nationalism.

The book is one of only nine copies in existence.

The Pope gave Castro a brightly coloured mosaic portrait of Christ.

Cuba might be Communist, but yet over half of Cubas population of today is Christian.

During Castros final days, Castro wrote an article praising religious figures of history...a far leap from Castros one time anti religious stance.

The progress of Fidel’s soul since then is mostly shrouded in mystery, but for one tantalizing if rambling piece he wrote recently for Granma, Cuba’s official communist daily.

Entitled ‘The Uncertain Destiny of the Human Species’, the October 9th article noted how “there are many more qualities in religious principles than uniquely political ones” and that “many of the most inspired artistic works were born of hands of religious people.” Observing that the great achievements of science did not preclude theories of God’s creating the universe, Fidel’s article acknowledges how important religions are to humanity.

It shows, if nothing else, that religion was on his mind in his final days.
He ends by noting that he knows a fair bit about Jesus Christ because of what his Jesuit and de la Salle schools taught him, and how he recalls the bible stories of Adam and Eve, Noah and the Ark, as well as “the mannah that fell from heaven when as a result of droughts and other causes there was a lack of food.”

It is an intriguing story to pick out from the Bible - an example of where the needs of the people were met neither by the free market, nor by socialist central planning, but the providence of a benign creator.

He adds: “I shall try on another occasion to transmit further ideas about this singular problem.”

He never did, and the faith of his final hours will probably always remain a mystery.
